I would argue that Ryuhei Kitamura's Azumi was a pretty successful adaptation (that didn't need to rely on special effects), and Casshern was a good looking adaptation only hampered by a terrible script. I think even Speed Racer could count as a good adaptation that successfully recaptured the campy tone of the original, while still being entertaining.
