Personally I'd be ok with a 1p rise in income tax. Usually I'm against it, but extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures and nothing should be off the table. I'd like the government to make it only last until the end of this Parliament - they can't bind future Parliaments from keeping it, but at least it'd be harder to do so politically.

Other sacred cows have to be looked at as well. HS2 springs to mind, as does Heathrow expansion. Not saying either should be cancelled necissarily, but they should be reconsidered and re-justified at the very least.

One sacred cow I'd definitely get rid of is the Triple Lock. Remove the 2.5% for certain. I'd consider removing the rise with inflation too, meaning pensions would be linked to real wages - we're all in this together, so if workers recovered pensioners would too. But it's only the 2.5% rise that I'm absolutely certain has to go.

Pensioners have the triple lock which guarantees a rise at least level with inflation.

Starmer is a nightmare for Johnson. Cameron, who was much more adept at PMQs after his practice on the opposition bench, would have found it very difficult. Johnson, who has much less experience as well as being less naturally talented at debating, consistently flounders.

Good article as usual. My guess is that the tipping point as to when people start to get very antsy about going back to work will be around the middle to the end of May, with the lockdown ending (albeit with some measures still in place) not long after (end of May or early June). Anecdotally I see people of all ages and backgrounds beginning to get frustrated with it all (albeit still supporting and understanding why it is in place), and this will only get worse, not better. It's only been three weeks, meaning we are less than halfway through a lockdown that would extend to the 17th May. That's a long time for people's attitudes to evolve and frustrations to grow.

All a guess though. No one knows what will happen of course.

Of course there is a justification for subsidising the arts - the cultural enrichment of the nation. You may disagree with it, but that doesn't mean it isn't there.

I disagree with your outlook on the future should the BBC be felled. I consider it far more likely that we will face a race to the bottom with news channels, desperate for viewers in an age of social media, pandering to the worst excesses of their chosen side. This is exactly what has happened in the US.

There is plenty to be lost. One only needs to look at the appalling standard of news coverage in the USA to quickly realise that the BBC's commitment to neutrality (even if they sometimes miss the mark) has led to a much higher quality of content across the board in the UK.

I'm surprised it's so high having spent time in the comments section here. I guess ConHome comments sections represent ConHome readers less than I had assumed.

How badly are these volunteers needed? Will they be needed during traditional working hours? If so, will the government compensate them for lost income?

This feels like a non-starter. You cannot expect anyone, old or young, to forgo income they likely need to pay for necessities to volunteer without adequate recompense. There are very few people that could afford it.

Of course, one of the few groups that probably could afford it, due to personal wealth and second/previous jobs, would be MPs...

If you haven't already, watch Knives Out - a great modern take on murder mysteries.
