Given the Dev-Team's current track record, 4.1 basebands will be unlocked eventually.

I proceeded as you plan to and my iPhone 4 is successfully jailbroken and unlocked. If anything a restore will fix any issues you may incur with limera1n.

If you buy an iPhone 4 with 4.1 pre-installed it will have a 02.10.04 baseband. There is no way to unlock that baseband as of now. However, you can jailbreak with limera1n.

If you do not need an unlock, just update to 4.1 and use Limera1n to jailbreak.

There are 2 holes. If we show Apple a hole, they will patch the hole on the next hardware revision. If we show Apple 2 holes, they will patch both holes on the next hardware revision. If we save 1 hole then Apple will need to revise their hardware 2 times.

Use TU to upgrade to 4.1 without upgrading baseband. Use Limera1n to JB. Use Ultrasn0w to unlock. Or you can wait for PwnageTool.

While Limera1n is unpatchable through a software patch, a hardware patch will fix it. If Apple revises the bootrom, the hole will be closed.
