GazetteOnline.com : Jewel Hampton stays busy for Iowa

Adam Robinson is so typical of a Ferentz recruit. Under the radar guy that fits the system. I'd bet that even Ferentz himself would admit to being suprised how well the AR fit has played out so far.

GazetteOnline.com : Podcast: 'On Iowa' discusses Iowa-Iowa State series, offers prediction

Marc: I remember watching the Iowa-Iowa State game in '77 wondering how the series could have gone three decades without a game. The two schools better think long and hard before canceling the annual game. It will be another 30 years before it gets going again. Guaranteed.

GazetteOnline.com : Game Report: Iowa vs. Eastern Illinois

'Trophy' game? That piece of.......(biting tongue) hardware is the biggest embarrassment in all of sports. I remember getting a better trophy 35 years ago for rolling my first 200 in the saturday morning Juniors bowling league at Legion Lanes in CR. Just of of curiosity, is LL still there?

GazetteOnline.com : VIDEO: Iowa's Paki O'Meara - talking about a punt block, a recovery, a touchdown

Mike, I don't know how his runs looked from where you were but on TV Paki looked nothing like last years version. He hit the hole at full speed and had a nice cut on one carry. He just might have bought himself some playing time in the future. While others have quit the team for whatever reasons, Paki has hung in there and made the most of his opportunities. Enjoy your moment in the spotlight, #25.

GazetteOnline.com : Here are the divisions (with schedule, Iowa statement)

As disappointing as it is losing the Badger game from every year to two every five years it is more exciting to be able to get my Husker-hate going each fall. As a youngster I realized that Nebraska was what I wished Iowa could some day be, which made my dislike of the bugeaters all the more intense. Today, I feel the Hawks are every bit the Shuckers equal and then some! As for Wisconsin, I wouldn't be suprised if in a few years the conference schedule is expanded to nine games to include that game... GO HAWKS!!! Marc, thank you for all the great work you have done during the off-season to keep us up to date on all things Iowa (football).

GazetteOnline.com : Tuesday video

Marc: Thank you for for all the Hawkeye candy. Can't get enough. For 25 years now I have been spoiled by the great Colorado climate- can't imagine how bad it must be outdoors in Iowa this time of year. Question. How much practice time is the team allowed in the fall before the season starts? Thanks again...

GazetteOnline.com : Who is the best major-college football coach who has never won a national championship?

Nice list. My heart says Ferentz- not only has he made Iowa a perennial top 25 team, he's done it in, well, Iowa. Even though he is in a football hotbed, Richt gets the nod and a WOW for that amazing record and for doing it in the SEC.

Great news for the Hawks. Along with Blythe, Iowa might have two future academic All American guards in this years recruiting class. While I enjoy all those who choose the Hawks, these student (then) athletes are especially gratifying. Is it game time yet?

GazetteOnline.com : The Contingency -- Secondary

I remember the criticism directed at the coaching staff for offering Castillo a scholarship when his only other offer was Temple(?). I'm not saying G.C. will go down as an all-time great but he's certainly earned his place on the team. Also, for the umptieth time, this staff has shown an uncanny ability to spot talent where others cannot. Amazing...

When all is said and done I think the '09 class will be best known for the O'line.
GazetteOnline.com : On basketball . . .

Wow, 5000 a game! What a pathetic 'fan' base. Those who didn't bother getting behind the team when the going is tough don't deserve a say in whether Lickliter stays or goes. They have NO investment of any kind in the program. All they want is a winner. Well, 'fans', it's not that easy. You want a winning program, you want top flight recruits, you have to earn it. Show up for games. At least you will have done your part. Then, if the record doesn't improve, at least the fans cannot be blamed.

urclueless: I very well may be but allow me to offer a rebuttal to your positions. As to the 'great basketball talent being one and done' how many times during Lickliters tenure has that happened? Lickliter came in as a coach who gets players that fit his system, not necessarialy great players so I don't think we have to worry about that. Can he coach? I think that National coach of the year trophy on his mantle says he can. I saw great coaching during the game yesterday. Down by 16 with 5 minutes to play he took out Payne. At first I thought he was throwing in the towel. But after a short blow Payne came back in for Gatens and so on until all starters had a chance to sit. What happened is that a 16 point deficit shrank to 5. At that point the Hawks had the ball and missed an open three- game over. A lesser coach and man would have quit down by 16. Can he coach, you bet!!

GazetteOnline.com : Brinson won't play at Kinnick, but Eastern Illinois will, and is looking forward to it

Brinson was one of those players I was looking forward to seeing on the field. Unfortunately for all it never materialized. I doubt we've heard the last of RB transfer story. Too many hands and only one ball. The RB depth chart in conjunction with the development of the OL will be the storyline for the Hawks in '10-'11. Can we just get there already!!

Regardless of the outcome, I think the Hawks have turned the corner. Sometimes you just have to look beyond the wins and losses. In just about every game i've watched on TV this season there have been periods when you see the old 'Butler Way' Granted, more times than not, it was followed by longer stretches of the 'Atlantic City Seagull Way' I see in Lickliter another Dr. Tom Davis. Probably won't get the top recruits, but will get more out of his teams than he should. Sounds like a certain football coach that we all love.

Marc: Looking at the game in the rear view mirror is too easy; of course he didn't make the right decision. Or, as is my belief, the reasoning was sound but the execution was flawed. It is ridiculous to say that playing defense rather than just fouling is somehow not "playing to win". As in all sports defense wins championships. It has nothing to do with being an underdog or talent level. When you have a lead with seconds to play you must stop the other team from scoring. When the Hawks can do this they will win games. In my opinion, fouling the other team in this situation just says "we're not good enough to win".

I applaud coach Lickliter's decision not to foul at the end of regulation. If the Hawks are to become a winning basketball program they must learn to play defense when it counts. Unfortunately, this time they didn't. As for you 64Hawk, I don't care where you go as long as you stay out of Colorado- it's far to sunny for you!
