I hope none of your children have to go through what we went through. I only wish it were as simple to prevent as you make it sound. But thanks for your concern about his pain. He's doing quite well now. And I'm happy to report that he has a whole extra set of teeth just waiting to grow in as he gets older. Isn't that wonderful?

Thanks for the reminder. We could all stand to be a little more compassionate with each other, especially when it comes to parenting.

That is wonderful! Isn't it amazing what our children are capable of?

Yes, the forced apology seems to be more about the parents keeping up appearances than anything else. It's amazing how my children, even being so young, will genuinely apologize for something (even as much as 24 hours later) because they really feel it. I could have ruined those chances by forcing an immediate, empty apology.

That's another one, for sure. Very frustrating. What do we gain by training kids to give automatic responses? Instead, let them feel what it feels like to love and be loved, and let them say it when they mean it!

Holly, Thanks for your comment. I certainly don't mean to diminish the struggles of families dealing with serious drug problems. I can't imagine there are any easy solutions for helping a loved one out of such a situation...

You got it right when you said this post is about loving and trusting. It is about the idea that scheming about random, routine drug testing is a good way to keep your healthy teen off drugs. The lack of trust underlying that idea is just bad for relationships.
