Clean and brighten after the sanding. This will allow the stain to absorb into the wood grain better. Use Armstrong Clark in a semi-solid for max UV protection.

Sorry, I meant what type of stain is currently on the wood now? This makes a big on the prep and what type of stain to use after the prep.

You would have to ask the manufacturer of the brand you choose to see if it works on composite wood.

What type of stain? Solid, semi-transparent, transparent, etc? Makes a big difference on the prep and what type of stain to use.

Depends on if the wood is smooth or rough sawn cut. See this:

Look at TWP 1500 Series or Defy Extreme Stains.

Try a lighter color in a semi-transparent. This will have less of a chance to be hot when in full sun. Nothing actually cools the wood. Look at Defy Extreme Stain in Natural Pine color or TWP 100 Series in Honeytone color.

Cabot used to be an excellent stain like these brands about 10 years ago. They were bought by Valspar in 2005 and they changed the formulas to get it into mainstream stores. Not even close now to what it used to be.

Try the Defy Extreme Stain or the TWP 100 Series for this deck in Texas and has mold potential.
