West Ham Till I Die : Celebrity Supporters

Would an official Non-Celebrity count in this list? If so, add ME! I was a Non-Celebrity on Soccer AM little over 4 years ago. Took a picture of me to Turin, Italy to see if anyone knew who I was as well!

West Ham Till I Die : I Have Faith in Zola

So, Steve Clarke has come out and said everyone should blame him and not Zola - cue the bandwagon. Ditching Zola anytime soon is a daft idea, because regardless of who is brought in to replace them, they too will be facing the exact same issues that Zola does now (and has done before). Upson and Cole being injured just goes to show how threadbare in terms of quality we really are, but Zola hasn't exactly been able to do anything to combat those type of scenarios - Collins being sold was not of his doing either and only served to destabilize our already limited team. If Straumur/Hansa/Claret & Blue Holdings really do want the best possible price for West Ham, they need to dig deep and help Zola out, especially now that they have been given 9 months of breathing space on their debts as was widely expected. And as for the "purchase of Jimenez", don't forget that he is in fact ON LOAN. Yes there is an option to buy at the end of the loan period, but we haven't purchased him by any means. We could just send him back to Inter at the end of the loan period and won't have wasted millions on a player who - up until now at least - hasn't cut it in English football. Shrewd move by all accounts, shame it couldn't have happened that way with Savio.

True, it's human nature to fight for what we believe in and I appreciate my theory is easier said than done. I am in agreement of your proposal above with the "ignore" option though. Effectively gives everyone the power to choose what they want to see, etc.

The most effective way of dealing with troublesome posters, otherwise known as 'trolls', is to cut them off completely (for lack of a better phrase). Don't acknowledge them, don't give them the time of day, don't respond or react to them at all. Their insatiable appetite is only fed by responses and reactions, nothing more, nothing less. If all of the good and decent folk acted as a collective, bound to resisting retaliation, then the minority of 'trolls' would eventually desist and wilt away.

An insightful and well thought out article, SJ. Like you I was always just a reader of the posts on here, taking the plunge and getting involved no more than a few days ago. All being well I hope to be commenting more and more as time goes by - here for the duration. I'd like to add that I myself, along with a fellow West Ham supporter, run a football forum for fans of all clubs, and so we know firsthand what it's like to have to step up disciplinary procedures and the ilk, it's not easy by a long shot. We all love banter, but some choose to tread a very fine line between banter and derogatory assaults, most of the time surpassing either or both. The internet as a whole is a revolutionary tool, until the minority wish to spoil it for the majority. Personally I think sites which are largely dependent on user interaction, like this site for example, would be far better places to convene if everyone were implored to post and/or comment under their very own name, rather than made up names and the like, pretty much in the same way sites like Facebook do. Implementing that is far from simple though, more so given the potential implications involved. Keep up the sterling work though SJ, and Iain. ;)

West Ham Till I Die : Adriano on a Free?

If your insistence on your reasoning being based on the fact that Adriano is yet to play in the Premiership, then I'll leave you to it. It'll save time.

So Beattie's record of 9 in 30 with Stoke is better than Adriano's 19 in 30 with Flamengo? Do bear in mind that Beattie has scored 3 league goals in the same time it's taken Adriano to score all 19 (since May this year).

So instead of a world class striker who has put his personal problems behind him, you want to go for someone who doesn't score that much but throws a wobbly with his manager over something as inane as a Christmas party?

A valid point there, but it's whether Adriano wants to move in the January window or whether he is prepared to see out his contract which ends in May 2010. We are short of attacking options even with Cole fit, so it'll be interesting to see how Cole's situation plays out irrespective of what happens in relation to Adriano. Having said that, with the World Cup looming and the Brazilian season now at an end (which Flamengo won for the first time in 17 years with the help of Adriano being top scorer with 19 goals), it makes sense for him to move on to better his chances of forcing his way into Dunga's squad for South Africa. The chances of Adriano coming to West Ham are probably remote at best, but a few aspects do go in our favour: First team football, away from Italy and a team who play (or at least try to play!) attractive football under the ever-optimistic guidance of a young and talented manager.

He only had a one year contract with Flamengo and has publicly stated he would consider his options once that year was up. His return to his first club was more about him getting back to the player and person he used to be than anything else.

End of career Serie A players? He left Serie A to combat his personal troubles which he seems to have done admirably, giving up his lucrative contract with Inter in the process, but also, he's 27 years old! Hardly at the end of his career.

Just look at how Zola & Co have turned Cole around. Free transfer for a player who on his day is one of the best strikers in the world and who could potentially replicate that kind of form in the Claret & Blue - bring it on!
