While the tea party has been largely co-opted by the republican party because they saw their base shrinking, know that originally the tea party evolved from Ron Paul followers that were completely non-partisan. Palin, and Glen Beck are not the owners of the tea party. They are parasites that have latched onto an idea that they wish they had the intelligence to think of. Not enough pressure from the constituents. It's not a priority. The MADD crowd was pretty persistent in the 80's so my guess is that originally had some influence. Now people are more distracted by the economy, so it just isn't seen as being important.

Not always, but over the last 15-20 years there has been a huge consolidation of news outlets to come under the ownership of just a handful of corporations. They used to be independently owned, and could report as they saw things with less editorial control. Not anymore.
