Or the real and truthful explanation is that they made a commitment to an imaginary being. There's nothing wrong with being confused after making such a commitment and finding out that nothing happened, rather they should be congratulated for not being able to fool themselves into thinking something special happened, when it really didn't.

Says pretty much everyone with half a brain. No baby is born believing in a deity. Only when they are indoctrinated with the religion corresponding to the region they live in do they even stand a chance of believing in any deity, let alone yours in particular.
