Thanks for the link, definitely a more comprehensive resource.

I think it goes to show the level of cognitive dissonance these people are dealing with. When something as horrible as rape comes up, their brain fits it into the context of their religious beliefs, rather than their beliefs being shaped by reality.

I am of the opinion that these ideas should be eradicated, not the people themselves. That's one of the reasons I run the blog, so hopefully I can help a few more of these ideas disappear.

Sure! I did mention the least religious countries in the first paragraph there, but I can give you a few more. In terms of least religious, the top ten are: China, Japan, Czech Republic, France, South Korea, Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Iceland, Australia, Ireland.

The most religious, in order, are: Ghana, Nigeria, Armenia, Fiji, Macedonia, Romania, Iraq, Kenya, Peru, Brazil

While I would never wish a rape upon everyone, in principal I see what you are saying. It's just like these anti abortion 40 year old suburban moms. I do wonder if their perspective would be different if they had gotten pregnant 15 or 16.

Dipshittery! Now there's a word I've never seen before, yet so much of what I write about is exactly that! Thanks for opening my eyes to the beauty of words.

Well that's a very advanced question to be asking a 12 year old!

Basically, I would start by defining both words, and then asking if he understands what they both mean. Secular has a few dictionary definitions, but for our purposes I think it suffices to simply say it means a lack of any religious or spiritual qualities or characteristics. For example, a government can be secular, as could a concert or movie.

"Thinker" should be obvious enough, so I would suggest making sure your son understands the meaning of "secular" and then seeing if he can put the two together to form a meaningful idea of what it means. Hope this helps!

Fair enough.

OK in principal I see your point. But, I'm not sure I would agree that the 5 points of Atheism + should be called "very narrow, very liberal". Points 2-4 should be fairly obvious, point 5 definitely goes hand in hand with atheism, and point 1 is the only potential gray area, due mostly to differing definitions.
.
I'm curious which of them you actually wouldn't personally agree with.

I remember hearing about this on the Non Prophets (excellent podcast by the way) when it happened, and I agree with Matt Dillahunty who, discussing their excommunication, simply said "good". Obviously it's a tragic situation, and it goes to show how disgustingly backwards the supposed moral leaders are, but I can't help but agree that a few less members of the Catholic church is a good thing.
