KOMO - Seattle, WA : Fremont Chamber to host debate over liquor sales | Fremont News

Initiative 1100, if passed, may help small business - but it will come at the expense of harming society in general. Unfortunately, that detail isn't being debated by the proponents of the initiative. All they want to talk about is getting extra revenue by putting more liquor in the hands of a society that already has a problem with it. Sure, not everybody is going to abuse it, but there is more than enough evidence that it will only add to the problem.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Prominent climber believed injured in fall on Mt. Larrabee | KOMO News | Seattle News, Weather, Spor

To answer your question, "Experience" is relevant, since it can certainly help to manage the danger. Doing almost anything without proper knowledge/experience can result in danger. To be even more specific, knowledge doesn't necessarily mean experience (and vice versa). Your reference to the stunt motorcycle riding down 405 isn't a fair comparison: several elements about it make it a stupid decision right from the start. Even with a support crew and careful planning, involving the police to manage traffic, you're bound to eventually dump your bike and hurt yourself - even limited experience makes this obvious. Doing it without the crew and police support is just plain stupid. In contrast, climbing a mountain doesn't necessarily have the same inherent risks. True, that won't stop an experienced climber from making a novice mistake, and it doesn't mean that chance won't get the best of somebody doing everything right, but an experienced person in an activity with a history of failures and success can manage the risk by making certain decisions. We should all note that the guy is 71 years old (according to the article): to have made it to that age and still be able to climb to 7,000 feet ....I'd say he knew what he was doing.

In a way, this is interesting. Those foods do seem to be long standing staples. Of course, the vegetarian crowd may not go for the Fried Chicken....but secretly they probably want it :) Anyway, it's worth keeping this list in mind when planning meals for a large group of people - just don't try it for Thanksgiving.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Avg. mortgage rate up to 4.35 pct, off decades-low | KOMO News | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, Brea

Whether it's 4 percent or 5 percent....these rates would be unbelievable no too long ago. With home prices dropping and rates staying low, some people may be able to make a great deal for themselves. However, home prices still aren't exactly cheap...and so if interest rates start rising (for various reasons) then it seems like home prices will remain stagnant for quite a while. Of course, it doesn't look like rates will move significantly higher for a few years.

I was thinking the same. It's that simple. I'd like to hear why the death penalty shouldn't be imposed more often for crimes such as this. How is it too extreme to take away all the rights of a person who has done the same to others? In many countries, simply dealing in drugs results in hanging. It would go a long way in cleaning up this country if we enacted similar measures.

I'm not sure about item "E". Often times, the purchase of a new machine can reduce the need for labor. The goal of the bill is to stimulate jobs. I'd propose that as long as the machine is sourced from the USA, then it would satisfy the goal: american jobs are created/maintained in order to create the machine.

Unfortunately, he didn't just "walk off" the job. He deployed an emergency slide (cost of $25,000), took an aircraft out of service, and caused the delay of other passengers. Not to mention the danger factor of doing all of this on an active runway. Sure, it sounded like a fun way to go at the time, but it was a stupid thing to do. There needs to be a penalty as a deterrent to others. For example, what if a passenger had done the same thing? What penalty would you assign the passenger?

I agree this could help, but only if the bill is written so that the it meets the following conditions: A) The capital investments must be sourced from the USA. B) The assets / technology that are associated with the benefits remain in the USA. C) The research and development must occur in the USA and be specifically for local facilities. Can you think of any others?

Actually, it was known long ago what a corporation or any other organization or person would do if freed from restrictions: greed takes over. You really can't blame this on Regan: he's been out of office for over 20 years. If what he did was so bad, why didn't all the other presidents since Regan do something different? Clinton had his eight years. The solution is not left or right. It needs balance. There needs to be free market with regulation. When employed, it works. Absolute freedom guarantees that people will only bump into one another in pursuit of selfishness....on the reverse site, over regulation guarantees that people will feel so confined they will rebel. Let's stop with the left and right trash talk: that's exactly the kind of inner fighting certain politicians desire, since it allows them to hold power. Instead, demand balance.

Exactly what institution has granted them the title of "expert"? Keep in mind that many of these same "experts" had a hand in the free-wheeling policies and investment strategies that failed so miserably. Nothing in this article is news to anyone who even so much as skims the news. Apparently this "economic forum" was just an excuse to take a nice work-vacation in Italy while the weather is still nice.

I would be surprised if what they did wasn't illegal. It's not that I read the law books as a hobby, but it seems that the contents of their suitcase would fall under common law...and that a reasonable person would consider their actions as an unlawful threat. The actual punishment may not be great, but it seems like they should expect to find themselves in court and having to explain. And, yes, this applies to everybody who pulls a stunt like this - regardless of where they're from.

I think we basically agree on the fundamentals here. However, your last sentence is the subject of my point...and probably why most people are so frustrated: the airport setting IS already an area that touts total security and yet it fails miserably when it comes to the most simple and obvious threats. The 911 highjackers took advantage of the rules. They stayed just inside the "rulebook" guidelines and were able to pull off their plan unchallenged - despite their being alarms on several fronts. Fast forward ten years and you and I are no longer able to carry fingernail clippers, we're stripping off our clothes, walking through x-ray scanners, enduring pat downs... when the real highjackers are studying the new rules and skating right by the system.

I intended the word "suspicious" to be taken sarcastically. To me, there isn't anything mysterious about it - the one who packed that case made a direct threat. Again, he packed several mock bombs along with all the other tools of the highjacking trade in his luggage - post 911. That's far from a harmless misunderstanding.

I don't want to spoil your peace of mind, but consider the facts from 911: -- The highjackers from 911 were also under surveillance prior to their attack. -- At least some of the highjackers set of a security alert prior to their boarding the plane. They were allowed to board the plane anyway. Some things don't need to be explained or will never be explained. However, anybody that knowingly packs mock bombs in his/her airline luggage - yes, these were intended to be mock bombs - is up to no good.

How about the mock bombs in their luggage? Be honest - aren't you a even a little suspicious of somebody who packs several simulated bombs and box cutters knowing full well that this isn't 1999 anymore? Oh, I know, there are many reasons why somebody would want to tape many watches and cell phones together in a particular fashion....and most of the reasons involve creating a bomb. And the box cutters? Well, I'll bet they were just packed as a good luck charm.

Actually, I don't think most people are familiar with the Weimer republic...at least not the details. You are correct, the Weimer reupublic did drive the currency down. However there were some benefits: those with debt (including the government) saw their debt essentially cancelled by the inflation. Unfortunately, the common man (and woman) got hit the hardest, since the inflation also wiped out savings. Just to be clear, the negative effects overwhelmed the positive effects: the Weimer republic was soon crushed as Hitler (and friends) used the public's misery as a political tool to come to power. Apparently this same sort of cycle (on a much smaller scale) has occurred in more recent times. I believe the same sort of play occurred in the United States in the the late 60's and early 70's. The Vietnam war debt was partially taken care of by the subsequent money printing and inflation. Again, senior citizens (fixed income) had a tough time during that.

Folks, this issue is a diversion from a much greater problem. Way too much time and money is being wasted on repeated "studies" about how to improve the classroom and influence teachers. Consider the hard facts: Kids coming from certain family backgrounds repeatedly do well in school (with exceptions of course)....while kids from other backgrounds repeatedly do worse and worse (again, with exceptions). This same observation can be made in both advanced as well as dirt poor countries. Sure, the quality of teaching is important, but given that the level of required resources is easily within reach of even a modest budget, success in the classroom can be achieved with standards that have already been long tried and tested. Go ahead and spew more statistics and pretend to be doing advanced social engineering, but there isn't any mystery on how to solve it. Unfortunately, the problem is tied to general social decay and so solving it probably won't occur on any grand scale.

There is not a housing shortage. Go ask your real estate agent how many months of inventory are currently in your neighborhood. There are many reasons for this. Yes, population DID shrink in some areas. In other areas, the building got ahead of the population increase. I think you mean that there is a shortage of "affordable" housing. There's a difference. Many modest houses used to be relatively affordable until the speculation fever started. Give it time, and these prices will reset...or inflation will kick in. Even so, I will agree that the jobs situation is dismal in many areas. Without steady jobs, the housing debate is a moot topic.
