I hadn't either, to be honest. The thing about reading or watching fantasies play out is that they're almost always romanticized. No one picks up an erotica novel to read about awkward, uncomfortable sex; they can get that at home. So I'll read a scene and think, "Oh, huh, that's pretty hot," and then I realize, "Wait, no. If I did that, I wouldn't find the 'exquisite pain' to be 'totally worth it.' I'd think, 'oh, Jesus, that hurts, STOP NOW." Every character seems to love every new experience, and while it's all cool in theory, so many of them that turn me on when I edit them have the exact opposite effect when I think about putting them into use. I'd say equal parts bizarre and mundane is a good way to put it. There's now a baseline for what I consider to be interesting sex, and few things exceed my expectations. That's why even though the more hardcore stuff sometimes makes me squirm, I appreciate getting introduced to new "fields" as it were. I've barely even delved into the BDSM subculture, so while I'm seriously burned out on editing books about shapeshifters, at least learning about BDSM mixes things up a bit. I also edit m/m romance novels, and that's pretty frequently a new learning experience. Plus, fewer shapeshifters.

I'm so enjoying this thread because I copy edit erotica and I've found the few BDSM-themed assignments I've been given to be really fascinating and... educational, I suppose? I've also noticed throughout my assignments that the scenes and acts I find the hottest are things I have no interest in personally replicating, not for the same reasons you listed but I'll stand in your "no interest in fulfilling all fantasies" camp nonetheless.
