Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Blue field practice report

I don't think that anyone really believes that this game is about blue turf... but you can't deny it's a factor. It's an advantage to whomever plays on it regularly. What if we decided to go with orange turf... bright orange turf? Don't you think that would be and advantage at some point? That's about half the games you play with an advantage in your favor. Slight... but still an advantage. It seems to me that the NCAA should make a decision to have some degree of green turfs be required by all schools... or let the masses go insane. Blue turf, yellow turf, red turf, purple turf... whatever... If you want it to be a TV viewers nightmare... move forward with the insanity. Sheesh!

Just curious here... how much experience does TCU have playing in this stadium. It's not as if they get to go there all the time is it? Aren't they some distance away? Shouldn't this be a big deal for them too? Are they doing the "wow factor" practice too? Go Beavs!!!

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: OL outlook

Cliff... this is great that we have so much experience and competition but I wonder about overall quality. Where do our guys line up quality-wise in the Pac10 and nationally? My feeling is that we have a couple of good guys, but no brute force that can be a roadgrader for Quizz. If we aren't significantly better than last year, it's going to be a long season. Also, are there any plans to shake up the offensive plays, create more space and maybe actually surprise people? It seems like the offense got predictable last year culminating in BYU knowing where we'd be and how to counter us. It was a decent season... but it seems to me that we need to be a bit more creative to take it to another level. Your thoughts?

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Paea staying

This will be huge on two fronts... we should have a quality pass rush next year, but we'll also have a lot of veteran leadership. Let's hope they all hit the weight room, stairs and speed drills hard in the off-season so that we can hit the ground running in 2010!

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Riley staying at OSU

This is a huge no-brainer. We won't get a better coach to Corvallis... and the fact that he's willing to take millions less to be a part of our community is simply HUGE. When Riley finally retires (let's hope it's like 20 years from now) it will take a miracle to get someone who wants to earn less money, work with lesser facilities and with all of the other recruiting deficiencies. Until we get a billion dollar sugar-daddy like other schools have, we'll be at a huge disadvantage in almost every way. Don't get me wrong... it's a good school and a nice place to live, but life in most of the rest of the Pac 10 (other than Pullman) is much, much more glamorous. We are extremely lucky to have Riley & company so loyal and committed.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: A football playoff?

Keep bowls AND get a playoff in place... spread the wealth equally so the rich don't just get richer... and provide incentive for EVERYONE. Money will dilute everything though... the haves will stay the haves and the OSU's of the world will be shut out because of disadvantages they can't control... that's the cold hard truth...

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Leaving Las Vegas

Thanks for the post... I am still recovering... from both the Civil War and this game. After the 08 Civil War, with regard to big games, I am starting to think this team is defeated... on the larger scale. It's as if we are unable to rise to the big game with ANY confidence... any motivation. That killer instinct I've posted about several times is still missing. I love Riley... I love our team... I am a "believer"... AND it's as though we can't touch that next level. That beatdown... the Cincy loss... the AZ whoopin... even the SC game we actually had a shot in... and of course THE game of Oregon's last century... and we can't make our own legacy, can't take the next step. It's frustrating... it hurts. That said... I was shocked at the behavior of some of the BYU players... no-class punks... trash-talking jerks... and seriously, scoring again with the game well in hand? Just like school in the summer... no class. My respect for the BYU program is out the door. Talk me down, Cliff. Thanks, appreciate all you do.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Heisman talk

They eat, drink and breathe SEC, Big Ten, ACC, Big 12 and Big East... they glimpse Pac 10, Mountain West and WAC. Who could blame them for voting what they know instead of what they "heard". It's a complete joke. The rankings don't ever truly reflect who is the "best"... but rather who they "think" is the best based on their glimpses and peaks. Schedule more SEC, Big 12, Big Ten and Pac Ten round robins and let's make the pecking order then... but they won't... they'll continue to schedule Yorkstown St. and NWSE SW Arkansas Community College 4 times a year to pad their schedule cuz it makes good money and pumps up their records... all while the Pac Ten goes round robin and plays a relatively tougher schedule, hence beating itself out of any national recognition. Doing the right thing doesn't always mean getting the "best" outcomes...

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: LV Bowl thoughts

Cliff... excellent insights, as usual. I, for one, am still recovering from the Civil War... it's still a tough one to swallow... especially with all my duck friends rubbing it in constantly. If I were a betting man I'd bet on BYU in this matchup given the philosophy of "bet on the team that WANTS to be there". OSU was putting all of their eggs in the Rose Bowl basket as they should have... it's just that this game IS a let down game and, like it or not, motivation will be an issue. I just don't see them getting fired up for BYU on the 22nd of December like they would've for Ohio State on the 1st of January... ain't gonna happen. That is my gut feeling... I hope I am wrong. We'll see... I'd love to know your thoughts on this... thanks!

Big Beaver fan here... and a realist at that. I am not sure how our D stops them... I just can't visualize it. We'll have to outscore them like Stanford did... but with 12 days to prepare and scheme, I don't see their defense getting burned like that again. I am a big time pessimist here... prepared for the worst, but hoping for the best.

Unfortunately Quizz won't be in line for any awards until the Beavs go undefeated or 1 loss... he won't have the national stage like the other schools have (even U of O gets more national pub). Whle breaking in a new QB next year his only chance may be 2011-12... but even that is highly unlikely. If Quizz were at USC performing like this he'd be mentioned in the top 5 consistently... no question about it. Just goes with the territory at Lunchpail State.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Football notes, Pac-10 talk

If the playing field isn't fair for all conferences then it needs to be made that way. Having the Pac 10 at a voluntary disadvantage makes no sense and doesn't serve the student athletes or fans. I think playing the round robin is the best way to do it, but if everyone else isn't required to do something similar it becomes self-defeating. The NCAA should determine a standard to ensures an even playing field for all conferences and allows a fair comparison so that an 8 playoff can be played at the end of the year to determine the champion ON THE FIELD... and to the benefit of fans EVERYWHERE.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: McCants back this week

Cliff... Was Stevenson that bad??? Maybe a little indecisive at times... but I thought he was fine. Why change? Is McCants running lower this year? Faster? More decisive? I would love an update on the basketball team too... who looks good? What do practices look like? Projected starting line-up? Who is our vocal leader out there? Anything would be appreciated... thanks!

Much improved effort from the Cincy game... but Arizona executed very well... and the Beavs did not execute as well. Two evenly matched teams, but the W goes to the team who tackled, defended and executed on offense. That Arizona QB was excellent... We have to tackle better... protect better... and put their QB on his seat a few more times a game.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Sunday night notes

I am starting to figure out what the problem is.... and why I lack confidence in this team. I love Canfield... I think he is a hell of a player... and a great athlete. What is missing is the "killer instinct"... it just isn't something that can be taught... he just needs to have that mindset that he can will his team to victory despite the obstacles in front of him. Lyle has it... but he only has half an arm. In as little as we've seen Katz, I think he's got it... and he has the physical skills t back it up. I am very excited to see this kid get his shot...

I am not worried about Paea... we are just slow to the backfield and don't get our hands up to cut off passing lanes... Methinks the Beavs will improve this week... how much? I don't know... but they will take a step forward somewhere. Let's hope they put it all together. Forecast calls for rain... that could slow the passing game.

Angry... be careful what you ask for... I like our other options for offense, but I just don't trust Canfield that much yet. Maybe he'll show me he's ready for primetime at this game... but I just don't see it yet. If he had the presence and poise of Katz methinks this team would be feared. Just saying... next year looks bright with all the talent coming back... and potential for a great recruiting class. Play smart Beavs!!!! Open up the play book... and really "Let the dogs out" and put some pressure on this QB...
