I heard the D-line didn't have the commitment to completely shut out all opponents on their own this year. Could you ask them to prove this isn't true?

The reason I have a photograph of Holloway pulling in the ball and getting the touchdown behind my desk is to remind me to work on preparation and execution despite the chaos around me.

I know that allowing the Carlsberg brewery workers only three pints a day has been seen as a travesty and violation of their labor rights. I've been there and sampled the product. Yum. The elephants framing the entry gate are impressive too.

GazetteOnline.com : Ferentz's take on 'Love it or leave it'

They should send the sideline reporter into the student section to get some really colorful visuals and commentary on the game. Players and coaches should always expect to state their thoughtful and heartfelt feelings on an amorphous socio-political question after winning the big game though. Did you see the story this week about the British soccer reporter who didn't have a clue about what was going on during the game? They went to him for some detail about why a player was booted and all he could say was, "I don't know, Jeff, has he? I must have missed that. There's a red card?"

GazetteOnline.com : Hawkeye AV Club: Spring edition

It's interesting that you start with a photo of Parker and end with photo of the video crane. One of the things Coach talked about in Polk County last month was the change he has seen in the game and the demands it places on coaches. In particular he spoke about how much different it is from the days when they had to wait several days to get video and review to prepare for the game. Now they do it after the play and into the night of the game.

GazetteOnline.com : Spring break shields Iowa players from the gore

I didn't like it when Tom Davis was fired. His teams lost to the eventual National Champ several times during the 90s and his final team won two tournament games before losing to Connecticut. Fans were attending games at Carver and there was success every year, but some demanded even more. Attendance rose with expectations under Alford, but averages suddenly dropped from 15,041 in 2002 to 12,691 in 2003 and has slowly gone down since then. Alford was 17-14 overall and 7-9 (tied for 8th) in the Big Ten his third year. Lickliter was hired to turn the program around with a very different style of basketball. Not only did we want wins, we didn't want embarrassing felony prosecutions. So, he had to get players with different skills who wanted to play within his system and with a high character demand. Further, the Big Ten Network now dictates the schedule and fans can watch the games at home. It's hard to justify season tickets from Des Moines and Chicago when most games are weeknights and you can just watch it on television. I'm not sure what the future might bring, but let's not make it impossible for a coach to meet our expectations.

GazetteOnline.com : Down for maintenance

Best to you, Marc. Will you be ready for Spring Drills? You were an important part of the 2009 season. Any word on who might come off the bench while you're healing? I heard DJK is up to 150wpm, but doesn't have quite the light touch with word choice. Angerer won't be eligible, but his combine stats show he can do 225wpm x 30 columns and runs tight circles on the verbal agility drills.

GazetteOnline.com : Norm in Des Moines

I enjoyed hearing his analysis of offensive talent too. He didn't just pick out offensive guys though. He mentioned Tarpinian specifically and talked about looking forward to having Hyde and a healthy Bernstine among others. With his deadpan delivery, he thinks the front four might be okay this year. He mentioned several times that he thinks Derby would be a great linebacker. I enjoyed him talking about the position of Defensive Coordinator being overrated, because all he does is interfere in practice drills and set meeting times. The crowd was unconvinced, but amused. They believed him when he talked about what a good thing Iowa has in Kirk Ferentz. He said in his forty plus years coaching he has never come into contact with anyone as good or as even-tempered, which he said isn't meant to detract from some of the really good people he's worked with. He attributed Coach Poggi's respect for Kirk Ferentz with the recruitment of the three Maryland kids. Brian Ferentz went to Gilman when his dad was with the Ravens.

GazetteOnline.com : Scrappy there, winny not

I forgot that there's no way for the team putting up free throws to get a rebound and score to win or tie. You got me there! I happened to catch the last couple of minutes again this afternoon and even the announcers were discussing, as Michigan moved the ball down court in the closing seconds of regulation, do you foul or not? They called it an age-old argument. So, it may not be as clearcut as you feel. There are variables that can play in either way that have nothing to do with coaching, such as when the defensive player leaves Sims open to get the ball and takes a wild hack at blocking it instead of being in his face.

I thought it was a sign of progress in how excited the Michigan players were to tie it up against Iowa. This is a young team without a lot of depth and they did not fold last night. Coaching is about denying the ball to the other team's distance shooters in that situation at the end of regulation. Iowa did, but Sims found the shot. I have optimistic thoughts about the experience these players have gained in combination with the four freshmen next winter.

GazetteOnline.com : Barta: Solution to 'Orange Krush'? Get better, fill arena

I think Lickliter is trying to recruit basketball players who fit the mold we saw with football signings this week. He had to turn the program around in a couple of ways and the players he has now show promise as a nucleus of a deeper team over the next two years. They've played top teams like Texas, Ohio State and others pretty tough, but haven't had the experience or depth to hang for the entire game. Tucker's problems with alcohol caused some problems for the team, but they are not nearly as embarassing as the felony charges Alford was helping one of his players with. Smith isn't contributing to Tennessee now either. I think Lickliter has another year to show the turnaround.
