KOMO - Seattle, WA : Governor signs bill revamping teacher evaluations | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weather, Sports

How will a 'generic' evaluation form like this be used to evaluate teachers in subjects like PE, Music, and Art, etc.? Those teachers do not teach things that are measured on the state wide tests - at least not yet. ironwaffle is right. Something needs to happen to the reporting system that allows schools to set aside the kids who are on IEPs (are in special ed classes). They are never going to pass the State tests. Most of them should never even be tested, it's not really fair to them to make them sit and try and pass a test when they can't read it.

What a horrible situation. Where is her family? Why wasn't this niece checking up on her to make sure she was okay? Why did she leave a 78 year old man to care for her? There are a lot of questions that need answering here.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Without a reading, book banned in Richland | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, Breaking News | KOMO New

It's still in both of the high school libraries... at least for now! They haven't gotten around to banning books from the school libraries, but I'm afraid that might be a next step.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Without a reading, book banned in Richland | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, Breaking News | KOMO New

It was the School Board members that hadn't read the book; I THINK the people on the committee had. But it's hard to say with the parents on that committee. If it's their normal work, they just go through the book and count up the 'bad' words and give it a rating from A to F. This has been a huge problem in Richland for the last couple of years and teachers are frustrated by the small group of parents and a couple of school board members who are pushing their own agenda. There is a school board member who home schools her own kids... why is she on the board?? It's crazy!! There are people running against them this fall though so hopefully there will be some changes.

Isn't it statutory rape as well since she was only 15? I thought the age of consent in Washington was 16 and since he's a couple of years older it falls into that category, but I'm not sure.

Great for the locks, bad for the people of the Tri-Cities who are having to pay much higher gas prices. Gas, as well as many other things, is normally shipped to us on barges, and I read that it takes over 700 semi-truck tankers to carry as much as 1 barge can carry. Gas has already gone up about 20 cents in the week the locks have been closed. What do you suppose it will be in March, assuming it re-opens on time?

What about the school district's decision not to give any of the Title money to the school even though the school was eligible for those funds? (It was stated last week that the school did not get that money) That funding could have been used to hire more teachers to lower class sizes or to hire aides to provide one on one help for struggling students or fund after school homework help, etc. I'm guessing the money went to a different school or the money wasn't applied for or something... what happened to it? It sounds like someone dropped the ball on that.

The Sheriff department is funded by Spokane County so, no, it's not the State. It's all taxpayers money, but it is separate pots of money and I imagine the Sheriff's department doesn't have an extra $37,000 lying around to use on something like this.

As a teacher on the eastern side of the state what makes me upset is the way she is treating her staff. They deserve to be treated as the professionals they are. Because of the state mandated deadline of May 15th to inform teachers of their status for next year, our district has also decide to 'terminate' all 600 plus teachers until the budget is finalized. However, they have been working with our union about that and we've known about it for several weeks. Does it make me uncomfortable? Yes, it does. Do I appreciate being treated like a professional adult and knowing what and why this is happening. Absolutely. As for losing the LID day, I will miss the money, of course, but I understand the reasoning behind it and can live with that decision as I know how fortunate I am to have a job. The cost of living raise is a little more problematic for me to understand since that was something the voters approved and I don't see how the legislature can just decide to take that away. It seems strange to me, however times being what they are it's just something I'll live with and hope when the economy improves that will be restored.

I don't know about all school districts, but in my district we rarely get reimbursed for all of our expenses when we attend a conference. I just returned from a technology conference and I will not receive any money for mileage and this is the first time in years that I've received any money to pay for my meals. We often have to share rooms as well, which is not always comfortable when you don't know the other person very well. However, most of the time, I've found these conferences are valuable to me and really help me do a better job of teaching my students and so I'm willing to pay the extra costs so I can attend.
