Also during WW2 if you messed up too badly on a contract the military would ether take over the company or yank the contract and bar the company from any more government contracts. Biggest thing that happened was the military sent out a specification for a weapon and pretty much didn't fiddle with the specs after that, something unheard of in the industry today.
