I fail to see why someone else raising the temperature on a water heater negates any of Albers' culpability. Did he really prepare the baby's bath without checking the temperature? BUT, my biggest question here is what judge approved this sentence? Gazette, how do you report a story like this and not report the name of the judge?

In too many cases, I wish the definition of 'cruel and unusual' was measured against the brutality of the murder(s) these animals commit, rather than how much suffering they incur when the death penalty is administered.

Since this story first broke in the Gazette, I had followed the story in awe of how selfless Captain Wisniewski was--over and over. Although all the praise does not reduce his family's grief right now, I pray that as you come through that grief you will remember him and take pride in your part of forming such a real-life hero.

Buzz and whysoangry, I join with you in prayers for the people affected by this event. I am glad that the water spread out before hitting Hopkinton and Monticello, but the spread over farmlands means irretrievable crop damage for many farmers. My prayers go out for those farmers, too.

As a former female correctional officer in a state prison, I understand that most people feel as you do. Most inmates are not looking for time in solitary or a longer sentence, thus they do not assault staff. There are the mentally ill and violent inmates who are unpredictable, and they attack regardless of sex. This article does not say if this inmate had previously assaulted staff, but someone who has a 10-year sentence from 6 years ago and is in Fort Madison is a pretty good indication that this inmate is a problem inmate. An inmate that followed rules would have most likely discharged this sentence a year ago.

I think this is a great concept, and I hope it doesn't reduce attendance at the NMR&A. There are few resources that visually portray the full environmental impact of the Gulf oil spill. I hope people are curious enough to make the trip, or stop, to see this exhibit.

I guess I'm a minority here, but I am surprised this is being charged out as misdemeanor charges. IMO, any crime that is committed electronically should have enhanced penalties.

Please remember that the comments you write here are too late for the deceased, but most likely will be read by his family and friends. Show some compassion towards them--any unexpected death is very hard to come to terms with. My sympathy and prayers for God's comfort go out for this man's family and friends.
