Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Gabe Miller interview

Was it worth burning the redshirt? I just don't see the point on Cummings playing. He is a back up on special teams and only got in a few snaps in the blowout against Cal. Why would you blow a redshirt on that? If Cummings becomes a major player in the next few years then I think he will look back on this year as a completely lost season for him.

I agree trademum1, we do have a long way to go if we want to beat Stanford or Oregon. BUT this was a great step! and yes, rushing the field was ridiculous. Come on students! Wait for the Civil War!

Anybody think it would be a good idea for Riley to take over play calling duties? Langsdorf seems to be in a slump calling plays.

Yes, it is the worst loss. No question about it. It is the worst loss that I can remember considering who we were playing. WSU is comparable to the 1980's Beavers. Horrible loss. I know fans are frustrated BUT lets all think back to 2006. Remember the 'CAN RILEY' Signs and the 'CANFIELD' signs? We were just as low then and we stepped it up. The schedule might not set up for us to make the SUN BOWL run we did in '06 but we can start get ready for 2011. Next year will be a big year for this coaching staff also so lets hope they make the necessary adjustments.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: UCLA fallout

osbeavs, good points here. We can look at a few things on why this game was lost. Remmers committing a personal foul was a big one. Quiz just had a nice run after a big intercepion by Dock. We look like we are going in for at least a field goal and then boom! we are 2nd and long and can't recover. The other big play was the personal foul late hit out of bounds by Robertson. This was on a 3rd down and they were forced to kick a FG. Tough call BUT if you leave and open area were a referee could call it then you are asking for trouble. If you watch the end with the clock. It takes around 5.5 seconds for the play to be completed. I hope the Pac-10 looks into it because that was ridiculous

How can you say that we wouldn't be 5-0 in the Pac-10? We lost on the last play of the game in both! Case in point, in the UW game Weaton dropped a bomb in the 1st Quarter that would of scored. James would never miss this. James is also the best returner in the Pac-10. How much better field position would we of had in both games? Wheaton is good but he is not even close to the same level James was at. Fly sweep, receiving, return yards & leadership, James was the biggest piece to this team and his lost has taken away our personality. I am certainly not discounting that this team is without problems. Our Defense still can't get off the field (that first drive of the 2nd half was painful) But you are right, if the team loses games that it should win then, fair or not, it is the coaches responsibilities to make the proper changes. This weeks game was horrible. Losing to a team as bad and banged up as UCLA is hard. I just hope we step it up the final 4 games.

Relax Beaver Nation, we are a healthy James Rogers away from being 6-2 and 5-0 in the Pac-10. You idiots calling for Riley's head were the same dudes calling for his head in 2006. Get a grip. Programs go through ups and downs. This team will go 6-6 (Yes, we will beat USC) and play in the Sun Bowl. Not Great BUT if this is a down year then I am OK with it. This team is loaded next year on Offense and I think we have a big year coming! GO BEAVS!

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Numbers game

I see both your points guys. If anybody out there thinks Riley should be fired they are nuts. He is a great coach but I agree that we need to look in the mirror on Defense and see that we can not stop the spread and can no longer get to the quarterback like we did a few years back. Yes, our numbers and Offense and Defense are bad but we are in every ball game. I still thing this team goes 6-3 in Conference and plays in the Holiday Bowl. Sure, I would love a rose Bowl BUT I remember growing up Kragthorpe, Pettibone era. I will hope every year for a rose bowl but won't be sad with Holiday or Sun (Vegas bowl sucks tho)

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: OSU scheduling notes

If I was Mike Riley I will tell fan base to relax. We are 2-1 in Conference and we we were 1 play away from being 3-0. We play 4 of 6 at home to finish the season. Our Defense held UW to zero points for over 2 1/2 quarters and is slowely making progress. Katz is learning with everygame. We should be favored in our next 4 games. Being 7-3 going to Stanford would be a great thing and a possibility and we would again control our own Rosebowl destiny The only big move I hope Riley makes in the BYE week is moving Poyer into the Starting Line Up. I actually am a Hardin fan but Poyer is a play maker on a team thats desperately needs play makers on the Defense GO BEAVS!

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Washington fallout

Are you serious everybody? Relax. Who needs to go GOBEAVS64? Riley? The truth is that we still have average facilities, play in a small town with crappy weather and have a small fanbase. We simply can't recruit great athletes. We have a few under the radar guys but as a whole we don't. We are seeing that on our defense and O-Line right now. I think what Riley and his staff does is remarkable. We can play with anybody in the country year in year out. 6-3 in the Pac 10 is great with me. If you guys think we should be playing for a national title each year then you need to seek some help. We never will. You can bring in Urban Meyer and it still wouldnt happen. Yes, we can put together a 10-2 season once in awhile but as a whole body of work, we will never be a consistent top 10 team. I am proud of this team. They are not as talented as in years passed. Losing James Rogers hurts this team more that any of you want to admit. I still think we go 6-3 in the Pac-10 and play in the holiday bowl. GO BEAVS!

I agree. Why go to Boise anymore? Its not like its a paycheck game. If we would of played a cupcake this week at home we would be sitting at 2-1 and in the top 25 still. Is it suck a crime to give us 7 home games! 2 road games against great competition is just dumb. Especially when you look at our track record from September road games.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Midweek notes

Here is what I came out of this game with * Katz, for starting his first game, looked good. I love his leadership & arm strength. I hate that he only had 9 completions but we must remember that this was his first game against one of the best Defenses in the country AND it was on the road (dont give me that neutral site BS) * Our linebackers looked SLLLOOOOWWWW. I love how Michael Doctor played but as a whole they need to pick it up big time. * DE were non factor. This scares me bigtime. If we cant get to the quarterback then we are in trouble in a quarterback rich PAC 10. I think this is a 7-5 team (6-3 PAC 10) maybe 8-4 (7-2) and either Holiday Bowl or Alamo Bowl

I think the real answer is that Phillip was WAY over hyped by our fan base and the media. You don't hear the coaches talk about him as a 'great' lineman. I have seen a few practices and it seems coach cav isnt a fan of his lack of intensity. Add that with his injuries in Spring/Fall, McAndrews playing healthy/good and what do you get? A good back up. Don't get me wrong, Phillip will be a stud and will help Beavs big time this year or in the future. The real question is will they consider redshirting Phillip if McAndrews stays healthy and plays well those first few games?

I am curious, I have seem them both play and practice and wondering what you guys might know that I don't. I am not saying that you guys aren't correct, its just interesting that both of you think this.
