In his transcription of this music – made in 1941 to help bring Mahler’s music to a bigger public – Britten used the word "Wild" to include in the title (maybe there was/is doubt as to how the German best translates into English). I am not arguing with what you say, and if the history of the piece is distinct to that received, then so be it. However, in the forty years I have known and admired this Symphony – ever since Walter Weller’s Decca LP – I have never come across a different version of events. So, did Rachmaninov not destroy the full score, as is said? If he did not, were there further performances during his lifetime? At least four decades were still owed to him and he was also a conductor (if no-one else was interested in S1, he could have scheduled it), but if the Gauk-led performance in 1945 was indeed only the second, why did the work need to be reconstructed? Maybe it was lost rather than destroyed? Do the rehearsal and then knock on his door and see if he has time to see you. Sorry.” So, after a rehearsal of Brahms 4, I knocked on his door and explained why I was standing there, out of the blue. He smiled, “do come in”, and we had a pleasant chat.
