Equestria Daily : Brony Thank You Fund Competing in Under Armor Next Generation Charity Challenge

Actually, no. There are lots of causes that bronies raise money for. There is only one brony tax-exempt charity. Splitting hairs, perhaps. And even though you may not care to make us your charity of choice, I find it a bit offputting that you seem to be going out of your way to discourage others from donating. We spend a lot of personal time and effort (and our own money!) raising funds for charity. It's somewhat discouraging that some folks seem to have nothing better to do than to try and tear us down. 'Coder'

Even if you disliked the original project it sprung from, it was over and done in 2012. We have been solely focused on fundraising for charities for over a year, and donate only to tax-exempt causes such as the Jimmy Fund, Engineers Without Borders, and CalArts.

The problem is, if you don't split it off, people self-report it. Likely approach for next year will be to have a separate "Are you hispanic/latino/etc" question, and limit the race question to the US census choices. Of course, we also had a ton of Europeans who seem to thinks that country of birth equals race as well... 'Coder'

I'm going to start with the caveat that I learned my statistics by osmosis from my PhD candidate wife, but I went and reran the CI numbers for a 1048 person sample of a 200,000,000 person population with a reported percentage of 3.4% (which is just the people reporting a "5" on the survey), and for a 95% CI, the interval is 1.17, meaning a high of 4.6% (rounding), and a low of 2.2%. That puts the total number (just for "5"s) at 4.4 million to 9.2 million. Unless I'm grossly abusing CI in some subtle way, I stand by that number. I'll be more than happy to entertain the idea that the Google sample was biased in some way, but the math seems right to me. 'Coder'

Actually, as I mentioned in the article, the rejection rate for my survey was right on the numbers for Google's baseline, indicating it was answered at almost exactly the same rate as their baseline questions. 'Cpder'

Two different surveys. I did a general population survey through Google Surveys last fall, using some freebie money they threw my way. 1028 respondents, 55 stated a 4 or 5 on a one to five scale (with 5 being highest) agreeing to the statement "How strongly would you identify yourself as a 'brony', a fan of the television show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic?." I am quite willing to believe that Google's population is skewed, in spite of a lot of research they offer demonstrating it holds up well against random-number dialed phone surveys. I'd guess the real number as closer to two or three million. The only real way to tell is to do a real phone survey and find out. Anyone want to do a KickStarter to fund a random-number dialed survey with a decent sample size? Maybe 10,000? Article in question is here, BTW: http://www.herdcensus.com/generalsurvey.shtml 'Coder'

At your request, I did a few quick SPSS crosstabs. You can see age vs % furry here: http://www.herdcensus.com/images/2013/furryvsage.... Looking purely at a comparison of means using ANOVA, there's no real power to the effect of furriness on mean age: Yes: Mean 20.85, Std Dev 5.700 No: Mean 20.05, StdDev 5.274 Measures of Association Eta Squared 0.003

Yeah, that was my bad, both on making it a checkbox and in my interpretation. It turns out that asexuality is a black hole of uncertainty among researchers, with little agreement on what it means. I've reworded the report, and added a chart, which you can see individually here: http://www.herdcensus.com/images/2013/asexuality....

There are some questions that, no matter how you phrase them, are going to offend someone, but are extremely useful, especially when you're trying to norm against existing datasets. Gender/sex is one of them. This year, we chose to ask for the biological gender at birth and offer a check box later in the census to indicate transgender status, as opposed to having to have a confusing matrix of options on the question, or leave people unclear on how to select a value. I'm sorry if the wording offended you, but it was not our intent to place anypony in a difficult situation. Coder
