Without Lidge’s performance last year the Phillies would not have won a World Championship. So it was huge for them.

The best deal in Mets’ history? Well the Mets would not have won a World Championship in 1986 without Keith Hernandez. So just amend that statement to “one of the best deals in Mets’ history.” Here’s a trivia question where every Mets fan knows the answer. What was the best pick out of a hat in Mets history?

That’s the same read I got. He was referring to the other poster. It’s a shame people here are so ready to insult and demean their fellow Mets fans without taking the time and trouble to try and comprehend what they read.

The 1982 Atlanta Braves started the season 13-0 and afterwards went 76-73 yet managed to win their division by 1 game. Also if one team gets incredibly hot and opens a large lead the other teams find themselves swimming upstream for the season with little margin for error.

All you’re missing is Kate Smith singing “God Bless America” in the background. lol Just like they should show some patience with the team you should show some patience with the fans. They’re frustrated from the previous two season endings and had hope the club would start off strong in their new ball park. They’re also upset that players on other teams trash talk the Mets and then laugh and celebrate on the Mets home turf (Bell, the Marlins at the end of the past two seasons, etc.).

I hope you realize that in the Florida series the Mets outscored the Marlins by the margin of 13 to 11 and in the recently completed San Diego series the Mets outscored the Padres by the margin of 17 to 14. Thus they outscored the opposition in the last two series by 5 runs. So how can you say they have problems with their offense? Just because they lost 4 out of 6 ……….

You have to remember that LM is 24 years old. He’s 6 years younger than Church. How LM develops over the next 6 years is obviously up to him. He has enormous talent and if he grows up can still be a productive major league player for many years. I wouldn’t give up on him just yet.

MetsBlog.com : Note: Church Blames Himself, not new Wall

The nooks and crannies in Petco are different than the ones at Citi. Therefore the Padres have no such advantage. I go back to the days that predate the cookie cutter ballparks. Almost every team had a uniquely shaped ballpark and the home team had a distinct advantage. Teams were built to take advantage of the dimensions of the field. For example the Brooklyn Dodgers of the 1950’s were a predominately right handed hitting power lineup that played in a band box. When they played at Yankees Stadium their right handed power was negated by the dimensions of the Stadium. BTW People used to speculate what Ted Williams would have accomplished playing in Yankees Stadium. Likewise they pondered what Joe DiMaggio would have accomplished if he played half his season in Fenway. I was there when Shea opened and at that time we expected the Mets to lose and we had fun at the ballpark. The score was irrelevant. But last night was different. The Mets were the superior team. But in proper fashion the Mets found a way to lose thus enhancing the tone of this franchise and adding to the Mets lore.

Ebbets Field had a huge fence in right and right center. With the Wilpons infatuation with Brooklyn perhaps this was a way of paying homage.

Most of the posts here are missing the essential point of tonight’s game. They’re missing the baseball history embedded in this night. Tonight was not like any other night. Yes, it’s only one game early in the season and does not define nor can it be used to project the season’s scenario. While it has no more importance in the pennant race it was steeped in celebration. The game was bathed in media attention from all the major sports outlets. There was pomp and circumstance created by the Mets for this game. It was the dedication of a new ballpark that had been talked about and anticipated for years. The baseball world was watching and recording. Years from now the results of this game will be the answer to trivia questions and another source of derisive laughter directed at the Mets. The save in this game does not go to the large salaried free agent pickup but rather to a trash talking Mets castoff. The next game will be just another ball game in a long season. But tonight was special. That laughter you hear is the rest of the baseball world.

[sarcasm]So you give no credit to the kid on the mound for the Marlins. Never mind that he has brilliant stuff and with the umps wide strike zone had complete command out there. Never mind that at times the Mets hitters looked overmatched. Yeah, the Mets mailed it in today. Yep, whenever the Mets lose it’s because they mail in the game. When they try they always win. So if you could get them to try every game they would go 162-0. [sarcasm]

BTW I don’t get to too many games but if you see me at a game stop by and say hello. You can recognize me as the fat, old, old, old broken down man with the extremely hot wife (she’s 22 years younger than me and a former award winning gymnast in high school and she hates baseball). I already know what you look like (and yelled will someone pluck my eyes out when I saw you). lol
