GazetteOnline.com : Iowa RBs: Three better than two, but two out of three ain't bad

I think Riley came in around 220-230 and that's where Vier is at, but this is just off numbers, as I really wouldn't know what to look for "frame" wise. We seem really deep at Tight End; I think it's possible. Seems to me that KF looks for athletes for LT and then molds them into elite players. I think that is what Vier is. Marc, you're probably right as it is a long shot, but I don't think many of us thought Riley would turn into what could be the best LT of the KF regime...

There's also a 3-4 star dt from that school that has Iowa high on his list. Cyrus has a brother who plays for Bama, so most recruitnicks think Cyrus will go there; love it if we got him, but I think we are set at LT for a few years, plus I think Austin Vier and maybe Mcminn could turn into great tackles if they don't break the lineup at TE or DE. I believe Gallery was a TE in HS and Riley played DE.

Great article, one of my favorites out of some great sport writers of Iowa. Punter's don't get much of the glory, but Ryan is one of the biggest reasons for Iowa's success.

GazetteOnline.com : Kirk Ferentz reacts to Todd Lickliter's firing

Aboojum, Not sure how your post really has much to do with this article. Probably could have written that post without reading any of the article except the title. No where in the article did Kirk say he thought letting lick go was the wrong decision or that it was unexpected. Kirk was just lamenting over a good friend, and the current circumstances. I understand the need for fans to be perverse, but sometimes the Devil doesn't need an advocate.

GazetteOnline.com : Sunday Reading Room: What they said about UNI around the nation

I think he would be a great coach for Iowa. I think Scott posted this once, but he does remind me a lot of Ferentz. I don't buy that style necessarily sells more tickets. I think style sells more tickets when a team is losing or close to 500. But when a team wins 30 games, style doesn't matter. Iowa fans always brag about our football team's D and complain about our O's tendency to be anemic. Yet, this is a team who won arguably the biggest bowl game in Iowa’s history. So just because Jacobson’s teams have defense as a priority and rarely score over 70 points a game doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be a top competitor for our opening. I have watched UNI play two good to great teams in the last couple of days and beat them; never through those games did the word “boring” come across my mind.

GazetteOnline.com : Some signing day notes

I really thought what KF said about Coker was extremely interesting. KF is well known for his NFL connections and to have a scout tell him that Coker was good enough for Iowa to be worried about him reneging is really eye opening. I think he will play this year and play well. Also, I wanted to say that I think KF and crew are some of the best coaches at adjusting to the strengths of the people they have on the team. I know a lot of people give the coaches crap for not opening up the play book, but I remember when we ran the option with Banks, and remember winning most of our games the Paki season. And really this season is just another example of our coaches ability to adapt game plans. Because of this I really think Derby will be QB, if not just for change of pace, but before Banks started for the Hawks he wasn't known for his arm...

You're right. Wasn't trying to take anything away from our players' talent, but when it comes to the intangibles: not fumbling, blocking, and such, Erb does a great job. I remember when ball secuirty was an issue, now I don't see it as one.

I was thinking that our rb coach has to be a phenom and really most of position coaches. Fry was known and still is known for all of the amazing coaches he had under him. I think KF is following this mold and would not be surprised in ten or so years if many of them were head coaches. I mean in the last two years we've had three freshman running backs and a running back who didn't play football the previous year; not only were they all productive, but none of them had trouble holding on to the ball- to me that's amazing coaching.

Espn Rumors: "That leaves OT Bryan Bulaga and CB Amari Spievey yet to make public their decisions (or to make their decisions, if that is the case). Both are said to be strongly considering coming back, even though Bulaga is expected to be a first-round pick by most. (One report suggests that he will stay if he's not projected in the top half of the first round.)"
