I think we have enough iron ore here on Earth. Imagine the uselessness of going to Mars to gather up and return ore in a cost prohibitive venture. And what could we do on Mars that we could not do half way to Mars or even on the Moon should we be capable of going back? The real reason for attempting to go further and ourward is the adventure. And the reason we want to do that is because we are humans. But, being human, we have to put first things first once in a while. Like redirercting NASA after the 2012 election should there be one.

I would like a similar contest in America. It could become as interesting as playing the lottery, following the musical chairs of American Idol judges as well as a welcome diversion from following the antics of Lindsay Lohan. But then some enterprising citizen might be tempted to raise mosquitoes in his back yard just to trap them as the larva hatch.
