GazetteOnline.com : Corbett steers leftover campaign cash to Gazette ad on ‘accomplishments’

Interesting thread and is usually part of an ongoing debate internally (both for the Gazette and KCRG). Kind of cool to have it out in public for a change. I oversee the sales effort at the company, so feel free to shoot those arrows my way. As to the ethical journalism question, I'd like to know what folks think would be a better way to have handled this. Here were the options as I saw them: A. He submits a "letter to the editor" which could possibly be run for free. Public could view this as allowing elected official to use us as a pulpit for his own agenda for free. Paying advertisers who have views contrary to elected official would have grounds for complaint of us discriminating. B. He submits a paid ad as would any other entity wishing to communicate their own agenda. Public could percieve this as elected official 'paying' for endorsement or other favorable treatment as mentioned above. C. We refuse to run the "letter to the editor" and don't take the ad. Elected official and the public could percieve this as censorship or news filtering, and themselves cite unethical journalism. If you were us, what would you do?

While I appreciate the invitation to the wild goose chase, the first three articles I read do not mention any threats originating from anyone on the "right". I guess as a person who interested in learning more about the issue, I will continue to learn more about the issue on my own. I will, however, restate my request for anyone here to provide links describing threats to the president specifically coming from those identifying themselves as conservative or "right". Ironically, I did find one article that described a death threat against Scott Baio made by a self identified Republican. The threat was in response to a joke made about Mrs. Obama. Figure that one out.

UNI is the basketball story in this state right now. Drake might be the hottest team in the state right now. It's an hour away. A change of pace will be good for you. The improving-on-horrid team to the south will still be there for you in February. Maybe you could do a human interest piece on why Eglseder is doing a tribute to Neil Young with that hair this year...

GazetteOnline.com : Hlas column: What a weekend for joy-coated state of Iowa

Two great moments: The first was sitting at the 50 yard line in the middle of all the big Husker boosters when Smith picked off the pass to seal the game and being the only one in an entire section jumping up and down. The second was being on the cell phone with my wife at the Horseshoe in Council Bluffs when Iowa scored the touchdown. The entire casino went crazy and my wife asks, "What in the heck is going on over there?". She couldn't hear me over the crowd for probably 10 full seconds.

GazetteOnline.com : Council OKs cameras contract to catch traffic scofflaws

Two comments: 1. Can anyone provide statistics on either reduced traffic accidents (or increased) in other communities where these have been installed? This would seem to be a more relevant and objective way to look at this than simply telling anecdotal stories about being broadsided or crying about tyrannical taxation. 2. Let's assume for a second that this is indeed a pure play revenue generator, wouldn't you rather have that than having the city up property taxes by 3/4 of a million? Even if I get wrongly ticketed one time a year, that is still going to be less than what my property taxes would have been otherwise. Hopefully someone can come up with the safety stats to take this conversation one way or the other.

GazetteOnline.com : Has higher drinking age created its own problems?

So what is the answer? Does anyone have any ideas? How about once you graduate high school - you are now eligible to drink regardless of age? Sort of like a fishing license (drinking license?). What other ideas are out there?

GazetteOnline.com : Cedar Rapids leaders: We were wrong on tax abatement period

If I understand you correctly, then you would be ok with no fire, police, park & rec, street maintencance, public health, etc. You would rather not be taxed and somehow pay a series of private vendors to provide this? Schools would also have to be completely private, which would mean a significant portion of the city's children wouldn't go to school because they couldn't afford it. I wonder what Cedar Rapids would look like in 15 years under this system. Do you suppose your island of totally owned land would be worth as much as you paid for it? Interesting.
