Mile Square View : Sign of the Times: A mantel of reform is passed on

Wow you really are defensive Tony. It's not difficult to get you riled up. Never mind the fact that I never spoke that night and that you've been repeating that lie, and others for many years now, it really doesn't matter because I harbor no further political ambitions, not even on comittee where I stepped down as Vice-Chair. Your Act is very amusing nontheless and I couldn't help but comment., You sign on here and rail on about the horrors of the opposition, yet when one of their "snakes", as you put it, find themselves in the mayor's office or council majority, you're very eager to work with them, particularly when there is something in it for you, like health insurance. Keep up the good work.

I really wasn't trying to make commentary on anyone local. Take "The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation". Is such branding supposed to to subtle? The foundation is a monument to themselves. If that's what it takes I say embrace it. I just think I see it for what it is, is all.

Well it's an interesting thing, philanthropy and I'm not talking about Greg or any individual person. We've seen an awful lot of people softly proselytizing either their group or themselves on facebook or with t-shirts and etc. It would be nice to think most people give exclusively out of concern for their fellow man. But we all know that's not the case. Failing that standard, it would be nice to think that most people give primarily out of concern for their fellow man, and secondarily to promote themselves. My view of philanthropy, and humanity unfortunately, is that most people give primarily to promote themselves, and secondarily to help their fellow man. That being the case it is probably best to embrace the nauseating self promotion, as most wouldn't give without promoting themselves in some fashion. The dark place I choose not to go to, and I realize it is a choice, is that most people give EXCLUSIVELY to promote themselves and could not give a wit for their fellow man. I choose not to look at the world that dimly, but as it happens, this might be the most accurate assessment.

Mile Square View : Hoboken petition will Let the People Decide when to hold municipal elections

Doh! Thx Eric. My point still remains though. With no primary and no run off you make it basically impossible for anyone to ever emerge as the champion of the opposition or out party. Most folks on this site are supporters of the mayor so in a very narrow sense that would be a good thing. Incumbants already have an addvantage. I think this change would deal incumbants an almost unbeatable hand. I don't see how that leads to better gov't in the long run, whatever your assesment of the current administration is.

Bret Schundler was elected Mayor of Jersey City with %17. Maybe that's OK. Special elections don't have run-offs. To me...no one should be winning with 17%. The fact is elections are not a very big expense in the grand scheme of things. 200 grand is approx. .2% of the annual municipal budget. When you consider that that money is used to allow the people to asert their soverignty it really is a pittance. I suspect all of the people that are gung-ho about this are the same people who will be crying bloody murder when someone sneaks into the mayor's office with 20%. Consider the 2nd ward election a year ago. How many sour grapes have been spilled about the 3 candidate nature of the race? And that was WITH a runoff in play. I don't get it.

" When was the last time there was a Mayoral election where the person who came in first in the May election didn't win the run off? " That was a rhetorical question right Forde?..the very last election. I'm sure you knew that:-) I'm not sure what I think about the "no run offs" initiative just yet. For those who support it, one request...don't go crying when someone wins the mayor's office with 20%.

What did she say or write that evidences anti-gay bigotry? That is a very serious charge. If I were to go online and say such an awful thing about a person I would be prepared with some kind of proof. Please provide it. If you can't your comments remain, in my opinion, anonymous and despicable innuendo, "Mattaccino". BTW, I agree with only most of your second paragraph because I have no idea what a "city-cracker" is. Guess I'm not up on the lingo. I tried.
That was poorly stated, of course they're in court. My only point is you would think that they will proceed in what they believe to be their own best interest, like anyone else would. I'm not involved in the proceedings but would be surprised if this was about personalities at this point for the creditors.

Maj, I think if I was a creditor, or advising a creditor, and thought my average probable settlement minus legal costs was greater than what was on the table, I would go to court. No different than Howie Mandel's stupid game show really. I have no idea whether that's the case here or not. Maybe you price in a bit of a discount for the cetainty a settlement provides, but not much. Do you see it differently?

Mile Square View : Policy, who needs policy I thought this was about my power?

Roman, are you really using online polls to get a "snapshot" of the electorate? Perhaps we should canvass people who attend city council meetings to get a sense of what 50,000 people think. Better yet, lets query people walking around on Friday night with too much product in their hair. You know there is actually a way of finding out whether the public wants to give everyone on the council 6 extra unelected months in office. You can actually find out if the public wants their municipal elections to be in November. You can put the question to them at the ballot box. I'm sure that would be far too democratic though. It would give far too much respect to the people's soverign right to choose who will govern them. Let's just have the council extend their terms in office 6 extra months and call it a protection of the people's democratic franchise! Better yet, we can tell the people we're saving them a tremendous amount of money on these troublesome elections even though the average Hobokenite will spend more money on bubble gum in a given year then they will on elections. The length of your elected term in office, Bad! 6 extra unelected months in office, Good.

The Hoboken Journal : Statement From Mayor Zimmer on Ian Sacs and Employee Alleged Incident

Hey Kurt, I'm actually going to disagree with your comment in part. A neutral third party is desirable, but neutrality is of course, in the eye of the beholder. I'm sure the administration and the council majority (or Mr Sacs and the other individual involved for that matter) have very different ideas about what a neutral party would be. Already before any potential third party process has begun, the Mayor has already indicated she believes Mr. Sacs was the victim. Fortunately, we needn't go looking far and wide for a third party that will please all. That institution is our justice system, and since, as you've indicated, this case is proceeding to municipal court, I think it would be best to just let that process unfold, wherever it leads. I wasn't there myself so I have no idea what happened. -Chris

Katie & Scott, Respectfully, it doesn't matter if the Mayor is directly responsible, as Mayor, she is ULTIMATELY responsible. To use a sports analogy...the Giants have 39 turnovers this year. Way more than any other team. Now you could blame Eli, Brdshaw, the QB coach, or the RB coach. But who is ultimately accountable? Tom Coughlin. No difference here. What did that sign on Harry Truman's desk say again?
