The prosecution laid it's entire case on the fact that she was a "dancer" and her lifestyle was therefore the only possible reason she was convicted. If you are a teacher you need to learn not to overly generalize. Yes, the families of these children should be held accountable, but who can make these parents get it together?? No one. I grew up in a smaller town where abuse, alcoholism, and crime was very much accepted as a part of life. Of all my teachers from preschool to graduation about 9 total stood out to me as a student. Those teachers went out of their way to do what they could for their students. Each of those teachers contributed so much more to their students than the required delivery of a standardized curriculum. That's 9 teachers out of how many? I had a total of 53 teachers during that time. 53 different teachers and 9 made any real impact on me outside of what they were required to provide. The rest did what they "had to" and then went home without another thought of those students with suspicious bruises, with obvious issues, and with need of someone to step in and help them. Children spend a large portion of their lives in a classroom in the view of an educator. Not enough of those educators think they should step in and do something more. My two most vivid memories of school: 1) Sitting in a principal's office while my kindergarten teacher held my hand. I was recounting what had happened the night before to the state troopers. That teacher had seen something was wrong and took it upon herself to get me and my young sister help. She kept an eye on all of her students that way. We felt safe. Still today I have friends that go "Do you remember our kindergarten teacher? She was awesome." 2) Being told by my first grade teacher that while I was smart, my sister would be either pregnant or in prison by 16. She said this within earshot of my sister. It affected her greatly for years. This woman wasn't even a teacher for my sister, yet her impact was huge. Hugely negative. My sister overcame that though, with the help of other teachers. Please don't generalize Tim. While you may be a teacher who gives all you can, the greater majority of educators don't seem to care enough to make a bigger and more positive difference in the lives of their children.
