ScrappleFace : Obama's Texas Gaffe Denied, TSA Denies Stripping Grandma

This is all very interesting, but ... Wasn’t there some famous event that took place on this day? Some tragedy that resulted in a huge loss of human life? Something we ought to be remembering? Ah! There ya go! On December 7, 1946, a fire at the Winecoff Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia killed 119 people, making it the deadliest hotel fire in United States history. Not to mention, Noam Chomsky was born on December 7, 1928!

And another thing -- isn't it time for our political leaders to abandon that antique nonsense of taxing us to pay for their spending? We are already borrowing 41 cents of every dollar we spend: I say, have the courage of your convictions and borrow the whole thing! Let the Chinese pay for it! After all, who do you think the Chicoms are gonna loan their money to, if not us? The Europeans ? !? (Snort!)

Gotta love those falling unemployment numbers! Of course, they are falling (in large part) because so many of the "discouraged" long-term unemployed have simply given up on trying to find jobs. It's a bit like saying, "Euthanise 'em when they get sick, and we'll have the healthiest society on the planet!"

... shared sacrifice ... Now, there's a catchy slogan! “It only stands to reason that where there’s sacrifice, there’s someone collecting the sacrificial offerings. Where there’s service, there is someone being served. The man who speaks to you of sacrifice is speaking of slaves and masters, and intends to be the master.” ~~ Ayn Rand ; The Fountainhead (1943)

Big Government : Deal Reached to Avoid Government Shutdown

Of course this deal is a piece of crap! If you are not prepared to play a long game, brace yourself for further disappointments. American did not slip into this slime pit in a day -- don't expect that it can be pulled out of it in a day, or in a week, or a year, or an election cycle, or two, or three. “These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.” ~~ Thomas Paine, in The American Crisis: Number II, December 1776

Big Government : Saturday Open Thread: Lincoln Edition

Part II : "I will not even qualify my opinion to meet the declaration of one of the Judges of the Supreme Court in the Dred Scott case, 'that a negro descended from African parents, who was imported into this country as a slave is not a citizen, and cannot be.' I say that this Government was established on the white basis. It was made by white men, for the benefit of white men and their posterity forever, and never should be administered by any except white men. I declare that a negro ought not to be a citizen, whether his parents were imported into this country as slaves or not, or whether or not he was born here. It does not depend upon the place a negro’s parents were born, or whether they were slaves or not, but upon the fact that he is a negro, belonging to a race incapable of self—government, and for that reason ought not to be on an equality with white men." ~~ Stephen A.
Big Government : Saturday Open Thread: Lincoln Edition

That quote is from the fourth Lincoln-Douglas Debate. For contrast, let's inspect a quote from Senator Douglas, from the same debate. Part I : "Lincoln maintains ... that the Declaration of Independence asserts that the negro is equal to the white man, and that under Divine law, and if he believes so it was rational for him to advocate negro citizenship, which, when allowed, puts the negro on an equality under the law. I say to you in all frankness, gentlemen, that in my opinion a negro is not a citizen, cannot be, and ought not to be, under the Constitution of the United States." ~~ Stephen A. Douglas
