The constant invoking of Lindzen by people like Blackburn is a shell game. He is one of the few (maybe the only?) climate scientists on their side with a long history of quality research behind him. And he is a vocal critic of many aspects of contemporary climate science. And he is on the faculty at MIT, which of course has an easily recognizable marquee effect on his reputation. But despite his apparent love of contrarian bomb-lobbing, he agrees with the climate science consensus on more details than he agrees with wingnuts like Blackburn, For example, he agrees that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, and causes warming. He calls people who disagree on that point ``nutty". He just suggests that the resulting human-caused warming won't be as severe as current models project, in part because he has a theory about potential countering effects resulting from cloud movement. (No-one but Lindzen and collaborators thinks this counter-theory is plausible.) He also thinks that the purported negative economic consequences are too great to justify significant efforts reduction of emissions. But he accepts that there is human-caused global warming. Just not as much as some people predict, and not enough to warrant intervention. Really, the standard response to mentions of Lindzen by that crowd should be "Ah, you think Lindzen is an authority. He says that denying the warming effect of carbon dioxide is nutty and that there is some human-caused warming resulting from it. Do you agree?"
