The Toast : Go On, Get Out Of Here

Fine, I'm going. But not because you told me to. Because I want to. (I don't want to, please don't make me leave!)

The Toast : An Open Thread, and Sea Room

I'm going to miss this so much. I'm not a prolific commenter (I've been trying to make up for that since the closing announcement) but I read The Toast everyday and read pretty much every comment. Often I check the link roundup before work with my coffee and then again once I get into work to see everyone's comments. Everyone here has been so wonderful when I have needed support or advice. Next week I am giving notice at my job after over 9 years and going back to school to follow the dreams that younger Chel gave up because the people around her said they were impractical. Part of me is not sure how I am going to make this transition without all you lovely people. Thank you Nicole, Mallory, and Nikki for building this community. I will miss you all in this place but will hopefully see you on Twitter and Slack. I guess I have to learn how to use Slack now, don't I?

Oh my god. I knew I was going to end up tearing up at my desk at some point today. I didn't realize it would be as soon as I turned on my computer.

I always request a king size bed on business trips. Last trip I was upgraded to a room with a giant soaking tub. I went to Lush that afternoon and bought a bath bomb.

I was blocked on Instagram by a random person. I had followed them because they posted a lot of cute cat pictures and Instagram knows I'm into that. I don't think they are famous at all. Fortunately for me there are plenty of other cats on the internet.

My previous boss would always stay in hostels when he traveled. I learned this when I mentioned I was going to Santa Monica for a weekend and he told me how nice the hostel there is. He is in his mid-40s and was making six figures. He was just cheap.

I've noticed in general that people who have been with our company longer get bent out of shape when things change to give new benefits. Especially if it something that they have no use for themselves at this point.

I have had to go to museums with current co-workers several times in the last year in the name of "team-building" and the only thing I can think of that would be worse is repeating the experience once I am free of them.

I work in finance, but in a small company, and this is not part of our dress code. I have seen people from bigger corps and banks that have to dress very formally year-round (nylons and skirt suits for women) so it might be a place like that. We actually go business casual in the summer and a lot of people push the limits on that. Right now our (paid) intern is the most professionally dressed person in the office. I am wearing leather flats today but they are bright pink with mouse ears on the front.

Sansa is so big! When we got Thor he was bit smaller than the cat. Zoe took him on as her kitten and trained him in important cat-things when she though us humans were slacking. He is great at finding a sunny napping spot. He grew and eventually reached his big dog size of 65 pounds. The cat would sit and stare at him because she couldn't understand what had happened. We had a dog before but he was adopted as an adult and, while he was a giant monster of an animal, he didn't get any bigger while we had him. A few years later I adopted an adult Chihuahua and the cat never really trusted that he would stay small.

I bought a harness and leash for my old cat and she would either flop over and refuse to move or creep along very low to the ground like she didn't think she could stand upright in the harness. Current kitty knows how to unhook her collar so I haven't wanted to try a leash. She seems like she would enjoy walking with the dogs but I'm worried she could undo a harness.
