He brings the Syrian ambassador to campus -- and instructs his class to serenade him with a recitation from the Koran. He told students that he would not discuss the Middle East because it is "very personal" to him, but do you want someone teaching a course on trends and movements in the Middle East who doesn't have a PhD in Middle East history and for whom an academic subject is personal?
