"the answer to a question no one was asking"

I thought that was the healthcare law.

Again, didn't say it was wrong. It's just tired, and seems to me a bit petulant (not to mention hyperbolic).

And "terrible" is a subjective absolute, you Sith. I'm sensing it now . . . DARTHShadowShow!

[Cue dramatic John Williams light saber score - you know the one. Speaking of which, we can agree, can't we, that at least John Williams was brilliant, as always, in the prequels? That alone must provide some redeeming value even to the severest critic.]

Yoda is the worst leader in ancient intergalactic history.

"Anakin is the Chosen One?"
"Yes, that he may be."
"And you still don't think he should be on the council [where we can presumably mentor, monitor, and guide him]?"
"No, the council he shall not a part of . . . be (or something like that)."

Good call, Yoda. Good call.

Or this:
'Why didn't you tell me that Vader was my father?"
"Important, I didn't think it was." [paraphrased]

Good call, Yoda. Good call.

Preach it, brother. I love the prequels, and am fascinated that folks can be incredulous that anyone might.

The criticism of the dialogue in these movies is hilarious to me. It's not like Episodes IV through VI were Shakespearean, even if the performances were *somewhat* better.

Especially when he later concludes, "Then you truly ARE evil!"

Wait. I thought only Sith deal in absolutes. No wonder Anakin was so screwed up. Obi Wan was the worst mentor ever.

I still love that movie, though.

I mean "overstated" not as in "exaggerated," but as in "stated too much" or "stated too often." The dialogue accompanying this post is excellent case-in-point.

Now that is the most reasonable statement of critique that I have heard. In my opinion, where the movies fail is definitely in the realm of truth and beauty (particularly in the lightsaber duel in Sith, my favorite of the 6 movies, btw, where Obi Wan can't make an effective truth-based argument for Anakin's failings, vacillating between relativism and absolute truth and thereby somewhat proving Anakin to be right), but that's not much different from 99% of all that Hollywood produces. Even where Hollywood finds the capacity to attempt a depiction at beauty, it is normally perverted in some significant way.

Having said that, I don't see this argument in the criticism that is normally launched. Rather, it just seems like a bunch of postmodern petulance.

Agree completely. I am one of the small band of defenders of the Star Wars prequels. I love them. I certainly would have done some things differently, but I'm not the guy that thought up the franchise and risked personal capital to make it. Rally, defenders, rally!

I'm going to get hammered by a bunch of ugly ethereal down-thumbs (thereby completely destroying my imaginary internet prestige), but I enjoyed all of the prequels and continue to do so, irrespective of their obvious, overstated flaws. It's solid fun for me, and now for my kids. I just don't get this "George Lucas stole my childhood" stuff. Without George Lucas, our childhoods would have been nothing but dumb Stretch Armstrong and boring, unbending, dull green army men. Huzzah for Lucas! I'm thankful for his flawed imagination and silly ideas. Besides, from the start, Star Wars (and Indiana Jones, for that matter) was always intended to be a campy, serial homage to the campy, serial entertainment of the '40s and '50s. The fact that Lucas was able to do so initially with such success was a boon for all of us. I think I'll go have me a thoroughly enjoyable 6 episode marathon (though, I admittedly struggle mightily with Return of the Jedi - but I'll make it).

Okay. Let me have it.

That was an amazing movie. I can't imagine any of those other animated films being any better (but I admittedly haven't seen any of them).
