Jennifer Moody : Moody: Seven quick takes on parenting

Ah, yes, parenting! Nothing prepares you for it. If you wait until you are old enough to handle it, you are too old. If you have children when you are young, you age twice as fast! I have to admit, I got lucky. My daughter doesn't usually cause me too much grief - yet. We'll see what age 16 brings!

Steve Lundeberg : Lundy: The worst of the worst

I know from working in corrections, especially with sex offenders, that they often have different thinking patterns that allow them to see their actions as normal and unharmful. But I agree, most people have at least some good in them. Our choices decide our fate, but it doesn't seem fair that the really evil people seem to prosper (probably because they are willing to do anything to get what they want) while the decent folks slog along trying to do good in the world and struggling to survive. Go figure!

My dad actually accepted my "the moose stomped my backpack and ruined my homework" excuse, and my "my backpack fell through the ice when I was crossing the lake" excuse. I never got away with the usual excuses!

Steve Lundeberg : Lundeberg: The creeps

Spiders don't bother me too much, but I freak at anything small and furry: mice, gerbils, etc. When I was in my teens I went out to the shed to get the dog food. As I reached in the bag, a shrew ran up my sleeve. Since I was wearing a parka, it couldn't find a way out so I peeled off my coat, screeching the entire time. My dad shot out of the house thinking I was under attack (as far as I'm concerned I was!) and the dog team started howling. I'm not sure who was more traumatized - me or the shrew - but I never saw it in the shed again! Better yet, my brother had to feed the dog after that ! : )

It's no wonder CJ and Riley get along so well! The both gravitate toward adults. CJ has a wonderful circle of friends my age and older who help her learn to handle life. We still are close, but I feel she is much better for the experiences open to her through other adults. And she makes it a point to try to dance with Riley at least once at every dance : )

It is always hard to let a pet go, but you did a great thing by taking Ruby in and caring for her. This is why I don't foster pets for SafeHaven - it would break my heart to have to give them back. Of course, the fact that my landlord would evict me if I tried to foster animals has nothing to do with it!

Steve Lundeberg : Steve Lundeberg: Waiting at the doctor

I solve this problem by trying to always schedule Dr. appts first thing in the morning. My Dr. is seldom late for a 7:30 AM appt and we both are refreshed after sleeping the night before. Since I ride the bus, it is extremely inconvenient to miss it because the office is running behind.

Glad you are you, Mike! BTW, I really don't like the new online look. It is hard for me to find things, especially with some of the colors you guys are using. Took me forever to find the Staff Blogs section (with Candra's help) and I still haven't found the Mailbag section. It's this legally blind stuff, you know?!

Steve Lundeberg : Cultural numeracy

The only reason I can remember we walked on the moon in 1969 is that is the month and year my mom died. I'm with Roberta - if a need to know, I'll look it up. Mothers need to keep too many numbers in their heads: birthdates, soc. sec. numbers, drivers's license, etc. We don't have room for a lot of sports statistics! (Sorry, Steve)

Steve Lundeberg : Glove story

I was 19 before I got my first glove, and I still have it. After 16 years of use, I had to put it away due to health issues. Now my daughter uses it. I hope it gives her as much confidence as it did me. I just knew I could catch anything with that glove! Oh, and don't take being catcher lightly - how many of your teammates have bats swinging around their head during a game, have to backup first and third, cover home, and refrain from calling the referee names when they blow a call? It's hard work!

Steve Lundeberg : Whither the compassion?

I find myself somewhere between sympathy and disgust. This woman has been helped many times. Help is still available, but she doesn't want to pay for it. I agree she needs a mental health assessment and some 'tough love' decisions made. She obviously can't stay where she is and stay healthy. The problem is SHE must agree to make the changes. Until she does, everyone is just wasting their time. I hope someone can convince her to make some good decisions about her future, and if she chooses unwisely, I hope the city or the police or somebody will step in and take legal action to stop the animal abuse and the unhealthy living conditions. It's time to HELP her, not just pat her hand and continue to enable her.

Is This Mike On? : The beginning of the end (again)

I go nuts when Candra visits her Dad for a week. I know the next 4 years will fly by and she will be off to college. Don't know how I'll handle it. Her Dad suggested I move to whatever town her college is in so I can be near her, but I don't think I'm that pathetic (yet). Got to remember that you have given them wings and it's time to let them fly!

Not to my liking at all. They may not be doing anything wrong, but such displays are offensive to many and not appropriate for children. Believe it or not, some children do see the newspaper! Thanks for not running this in the paper. With all the great pics available, this one definitely was not needed. BTW, you have great taste in music!

Steve Lundeberg : Lavatory literacy

Reading in the bathroom is a time-honored traditon in our family. Unfortunately, my doctor insists it is unhealthy and should not be allowed as we tend to sit longer than necessary while reading. The message hasn't sunk in. You can always find at least two books in our bathroom - one for me and one for Candra!
