They were not against the slave "trade" itself, but rather against having the "slaves" in their states. Slavery was not a race thing. I know that sounds quite strange, but Africans were not "chosen" by whites and Arabs to be slaves, Africans chose other Africans to be slaves and sold them dirt cheap in comparison to other countries, hence creating a market for black slaves.
