Not sure what to make of her desire to become a hairdresser, though. I understand the joke of someone being a total natural at adventures yet having no interest in them (compare/contrast to Rincewind, who has neither interest NOR skills in adventuring, save for his habit of stumbling into them). But Pratchett probably could have gone a bit less stereotypical in picking her preferred profession.

I've always read this as an intentional choice by Conina. She chose hairdressing precisely because it's stereotypically female, and she is so often denied her femininity as a barbarian adventurer. On the other hand, it's been a long time since I read the early Discworld books, so that might be rose-colored glasses affecting my memory.

(ROT13'ed because it talks about a bit of Discworld culture we haven't seen very much yet)

I think your confusion, and the confusion of several other commenters, arises from the fact that Tapdancing Lexicon is not arguing that she should be allowed to say it on this site, or even that it would be OK for her to use it in everyday situations. She has explicitly said that she doesn't use it unless a specific group has already let it be known that is is the term they want to be known by (in which case, I think we would all agree that the respectful move would be to use that term).

The way I'm reading it, she's objecting mostly to Randomcheeses and other commenters making blanket declarations about a very complicated subject. To me, at least, they seem very certain that they know everything about how this word should or shouldn't be used at all times, when the debate within the Romani community appears to still be ongoing.

As far as I can tell, she's mostly trying to ensure the Romani perspective (that the argument over this term is not clear-cut) is not ignored.

I can't believe no one has pointed this out, but SPIKE DID NOT EAT THE CIGARETTE AND THE CHIP, PEOPLE.

It's a classic magician's trick. You stick the item under your tongue and pretend to swallow. Your mouth looks empty since your tongue hides the object. Then you spit it back out when no one is paying attention.

At least, I've always assumed this is what happened. Why else cough the cigarette back up if he actually swallowed it?

I only know of one other game where something Mabari Dominance exists, but I can't talk about it because it's on your confirmed list (I don't think this counts as a spoiler, if it does just delete it). Truly underutilized as a game feature, because you never get tired of doing it.

I didn't remember the comment, either (good job, Mark!), but I did see how white it was, and pretty much every other white surface in the game will hold a portal, so I was gave it a try, and it worked! I always thought that was a really neat game design clue by Valve.

Well, I've never had any trouble following it myself, but I think you have the description wrong. There were two swaps when there really should have just been one. As follows:

I'm glad you already knew about it! I really came out of that re-read with an increased appreciation for Rothfuss, especially his control of the English language. I am so eager for the last book.

You don't need to worry about reading the comments too much. I believe that Jo eventually gets into the habit of bringing the most interesting points into following posts.
