Teachers have never hesitated to go on strike in their own interests, but if student athletes walk off for what they believe in, it's because they're spoiled and have never been told "no" buy their parents? Students and parents shoulder enough blame for their leaders shortcomings. It's time for the teachers union to stand accountable for their decisions and actions.

Teachers have long enjoyed the protection of tenure. They can not be fired or even reprimanded regardless of their performance or lack there of. That same union mentality carries over in to the athletic programs. Once a teacher is given a coaching position, they feel they need answer to no one, regardless of the circumstances, and expect the community to feel blessed that the teacher has taken the time to coach. Many have become fed up with these coaches and I think you will see a growing number of similar reactions by players and parents as time goes on.

Apparently the team was pretty confident that the athlete would not let the team down, or they wouldn't have walked off in protest. Casting blame on parents and student athletes for all that goes wrong is a typical non-solution. It is highly unlikely the coach sat the young man for the final game of his high school career as a baseball "coaching strategy". I applaud the team members who stood up for what they thought was right.

It sounds like you would like to strip this young "student-athlete" of everything and deny him any margin of success for his efforts. If you dislike the young man in question so much. You and the coach apparently have something in common.

I am assuming that the athlete the article is referring to is/was one of the teams starters, and that the athlete earned starter status through try outs and merit. If a starter has earned a position on the team and becomes ineligible, once he has complied with the terms of his ineligibility, he has every right to play in a position he has earned. It isn't up to a coach to "make an example" of him by imposing further punishment or consequence. I doubt it was the athletes intent to become ineligible, as it wouldn't be the intent of an athlete who becomes injured. But, once they return they should be given a chance to assume the position they previously held. If a coach wants to use his position to teach virtue, maybe he should become a priest, because baseball coaches usually use their position to teach more than judgement and condemnation.

Yes of course...wouldn't want those pesky parents getting involved. After all, it's only their kids participating.

The program is in place for the athletes. It is their program, and they, as well as the parents, should have a say in the in the way the program is being run. Although the player was eligible, the coach put his own will before the team and those who support the team. Less and less coaches practice "service before self", and communities pay for it dearly.

The user Boulder High posted this: "The students at Boulder High have suffered through so many bad coaches." Do you think this problem exists only at Boulder High? Many schools, if not all, suffer through terrible coaching in one program or another. Should communities be suffering because of school politics? Cronyism between tenured AD's and teachers making extra income? If you prefer the Ostrich approach, as opposed to honesty, you are part of the problem.

The reason high schools suffer through so many bad coaches is the fact that AD's offer up coaching positions to teachers who think they can coach. Apparently, in some cases, extra income for teachers pretending to be good coaches is more important than providing qualified coaches to the athletes.

The article clearly states the senior had served his suspension. What was the problem? A coach should be harvesting talent and encouraging participation. If players are walking, the coach is not doing his job and should be sent packing.
