That is where the problem lies with the franchises. They can offer alternative cheaper travel but only at different times. Using the term franchise makes it out as if it was a fast food joint, now the term concession is better.

I still believe the Privatised railway is far better and having worked for both sides of the railway I don’t want to go back to nationalised days.

The problem is the Government and DFT can’t decide what it is they want so we’ve now got this odd privately nationalised private system!

I’m happy to see NR kept under regulatory control but where the TOCs are involved they actually need longer awards for the franchises which would allow those companies to invest properly and then see a return on investment. That way Government wouldn’t have to get involved procuring new trains etc and just be left to specify the service requirements.

Where the Post Office is concerned it’s a dead duck. With less and less letters being sent, more people use online paperless settings the post has been transferred into a glorified flyer distributor for junk mail. As for goods delivery there is now a number of competitors offering faster, cheaper more efficient services and then combine that with the click and collect service also offered it turns out we’ve never had it so good.

Perhaps the railways could take note?

Whilst doing that would indeed stop Drivers striking it doesn't mean Driverless trains aren't stopped by industrial action. Also you do realise the time frame to bring in Driverless technology across the network?

Why is it always portrayed as the fault of the Train Drivers. and staff? Why is it always portrayed as the fault of the Private Train Operators? Why is it always portrayed as the fault of Government?

Probably because no one can decide what it is they want out of the railway system!

Please tell me where as a Train Driver I can be paid £75k for pressing a few buttons?

30 years in into my job as a Train Driver I don't just press a few buttons nor earn £75k!

Our biggest problem is no forward planning, we only ever build infrastructure for the now and never look at the future. The other issue at the planning stage is getting things passed, it takes so long that by the time building is finished the project is out of date and no longer fit for purpose.

Yes Minister is as relevant today as it was back then.

Political comedy/satire is sorely missed like Spitting Image, back when the Scottish Indy referendum was on I yearned for Naked Video and Rab C Nesbitt!
