Oh, you know, withhold rewards until they do something you like... :-p You might want to remind him that this could seriously take all of fifteen minutes. I have seen this whole process work in less than half an hour. OFTEN.

http://ctmofo.com/ : martingale-collars-leash-walking

1. Dogs like to pull. Even when it hurts, they find it satisfying, especially if SOMETIMES it works to get them where they are going. 2. I'm not convinced a dog DOES understand the cause and effect, particularly of a chain collar. At what age does a human baby develop an understanding of how a noose works? Because a smart dog still only has the mechanical skills of a one year old. To answer this question, I made my dog's leash into a loop and fit it around my 11 month old son's wrist. He reacted by trying to pull his arm away, even though this actually tightened the loop on his hand, and the experiment was quickly ended before he became upset. This shows me that the thinking required is indeed more complex than people assume. It is actually quite counterintuitive to move towards what is making you uncomfortable. The concept of "Chinese handcuffs" proves that. With correct use (i.e. it isn't on fucking BACKWARDS) a dog will learn the cause and effect through trial and error. But that just isn't the most effective way to train your damn dog. Sure, let her lunge, and she'll learn eventually, and if she's on a flat collar it won't do her any harm unless she has a collapsing trachea or something, like a frigging chihuahua. But if it ever EVER actually gets her where she's going, that reward will have 10 times the effect of any of those punishments on her trachea.

They are EVERYWHERE here. Because it's all kind and crap. Right. If you let your dog choke herself, it's still not okay, I don't care what kind of sensitive new age collar you're using.

She understands the food on the couch because when you walk away, you probably come back in short order. She knows, therefore, that you are likely to walk in on her in the middle of her crime. On the other hand, she probably has a history of successfully getting food off of the counter, so she knows that works.
