"Helpless" was also the Buffy episode in which Dominic Keating appeared, as the Watcher's Council enforcer Blair. Don't think he and Kober had any real interaction in this episode though.

You may like to read the short story "Places of Exile" by Christopher L. Bennett, from the what-if story collection "Myriad Universes: Infinity's Prism": https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003YCPZ0G/ref=dp-kindl...

It's an alternate-universe what-if story where an encounter with Species 8472 goes badly for Voyager, and the crew are faced with the reality of abandoning their journey home and making new lives for themselves in the Delta Quadrant.

I'm reminded of a certain plotline from Doctor Who in which a baby born inside the temporal vortex somehow became "part Time Lord".... :)

It also built up the backstory of the Maquis, which was necessary to set up Voyager for TNG viewers who didn't watch DS9.

I read Heart Gold and already can't wait for more! Please take this as an encouragement to complete your planning stages... :)

Aye... amongst the fandom, even the fandom who like Voyager, Chakotay/Seven is one of the most infamously reviled relationship pairings in all of Trek. Part of the reason I like your blog so much is that you see things from a fresh and often entirely different perspective, and take completely different things away from it.

I don't know. I daresay that women have conversations with other women they don't know very well in a variety of situations, and that if you're a heterosexual woman, you are not necessarily "listening" for that kind of verbal or behavioural cue in another woman that might tip you off that they are flirting or displaying any kind of interest. My point being that most heterosexual women may not consider, at least initially, that another woman having a crush on them is something that might be happening.

I may be wrong, of course. Women are said to be more emotionally perceptive than men, and I don't have the relevant experience - as a bisexual man I'm used to listening to these kinds of "cues" from both genders, depending on the circumstances. That's important as well - in the context of the scene, although their conversation is fairly casual, Jaryn is still a professional starship officer and Seven is her prisoner, so thoughts of potential relationships might not be at the forefront of her mind.

Sorry for ranting at you there by the way. I just don't like it when people read direct homophobia into scenes where it wasn't intended, and in some cases is only apparent when someone applies their own "wishful thinking" to certain characters and their potential sexuality.

Having just seen this episode, I don't remember the Lokirrim doing anything "homophobic". It was Doctor!Seven who pulled away from Jaryn during her massage, not the other way around, and it was because the Doctor realised that becoming sexually aroused while in someone else's body is wrong (and Seven calls him out over it in the very next scene!)

The Doctor rejects Ranek's advances, and Jaryn's suggestion of a date with her brother, because he - as a person - is heterosexual and therefore not interested! This has come up a lot in these reviews, going back to TNG's "The Host", where there was a similar clamour over Beverly Crusher not wanting to date the Trill ambassador's new (female) host for the same reason. Just because this is the 24th century and hang-ups about LGBT issues don't exist, doesn't mean that everybody is pansexual.

By all means, criticize Trek's writers for not being bold enough to give us anything other than a few token gestures (like Dax's "lesbian kiss" in "Rejoined" and the ultimately muddled "The Outcast"), or perhaps not being brave enough to push the envelope on conservative 90s American TV. But please allow characters to have, and to defend, their own sexual identites - even if they are boring vanilla heterosexuals.

In fairness (and it seems I say this a lot in response to your comments) Janeway does explicitly chew Tuvok out for the lapse in security which allowed Gar to get away with it for so long.
