The 'Ropolitans : My picks, for what it’s worth

Heart wants Rangers and Giants. Brain tells me it will be Yankees and Phillies again. Hope my heart wins and proves me stupid.

The 'Ropolitans : A tale of two outcomes

I'm with you Andrew. It is depressing, especially because they looked pretty good for a while in the first half of the season. But when push comes to shove, there isn't enough heart on this team. I don't know what it is. The other night they came from behind, but that was rare. Can anyone remember the last time they rallied late to overcome a 2 or 3 run deficit - maybe with a big walkoff HR? It never seems to happen. They care clutchless and heartless. Sigh.

I can't argue with this. Did anyone else think that he got under that first HR and it would be easily caught when it came off the bat?? I sure did.

The 'Ropolitans : Game Recap: Padres 5 – Mets 1

I really thought Valdes had some decent stuff when he pitched at CitiField during that Phillies series. I guess he was just the beneficiary of a lineup that isn't hitting at all. And is it me, or do the Mets ALWAYS have a closer that can't pitch a one-two-three inning?? Why do we always need to sweat (and sometimes watch them blow) saves?? I thought this guy was lights out in Anaheim!

The 'Ropolitans : Why you can’t overturn Jim Joyce’s call

I think there is a case here for updating the video review rules. But given the rules as they are right now, I agree with you Andrew and the play must stand. I hate that he got it wrong, I know Jim Joyce hates that he got it wrong, but that is how we judge our plays in baseball right now. It just shows that to get a "PERFECT" game, everything -- the pitcher, the fielders AND the umpires -- must ALL be PERFECT. By the way, I am surprised that the official scorer didn't call it an error on the pitcher (for not getting there on time -- since that's what Jim Joyce saw) and preserve the no-no for him. I don't think anyone would have objected to that.

The 'Ropolitans : Bad time to have a bad game, but…

You know, it is fine that he didn't have his A-game last night, but what is with Jerry Manuel not having someone warming up as the trouble increased? After the Utley double? Ok, not enough to warm someone up. And with two-outs Utley on third, everything looks OK. And even after the hit by Ibanez to make it 5-3 I would still not have someone up. But when he gave up the hit to Castro? Someone should have been throwing. And when he walked Moyer after walking Ruiz?? HOOK! He obviously had nothing left. He should have NEVER pitched to Victorino. Not to mention letting him pitch to Polanco and Utley!!! I'll give any pitcher a bad day, but to see the manager extend the agony and let it get out of hand makes me ill.

The 'Ropolitans : Yes, it’s early, but…

As painful as it was to blow it in the last week of the season in '07 and '08, isn't this worse? I think so. At least in those seasons we had a summer of hope and fun! This is just shaping up to be a miserable baseball summer. Plenty of golf will be played since I will probably cut down significantly on my trips to Flushing.

Maine looked horrible. Yeah, I turned it off when it was 8-0. Couldn't stomach it anymore. 7 games into the season and I already am turning off early. Not good. Plenty of time to right the ship, but I have limited hope and even less faith. How sad.

The 'Ropolitans : How the Yankees salvage New York City sports

I have a hard time not thinking of the Devils and Nets as NY Metropolitan teams. Sure, they use the name NJ, but lets face it, that doesn't really matter. The Giants and Jets could just have easily have chosen NJ rather than stick with the NY. And many of us in NJ are fans of some combo that includes the Mets/Yankees, Giants/Jets, Devils/Rangers/Isles, Nets/Knicks. I for one have felt happy to be a Giant fan in football and Devil fan in hockey because they help bridge the Met disappointments. And between the three I have seen 8 championships in my lifetime, so I can deal with that. Hopefully 9 (with the hockey playoffs starting this week) is on the way!!

The 'Ropolitans : Sheets to the A’s; Now what?

I'm not sure how you can say Garland is like Niese. As least he's a horse that can stay healthy and has MLB experience. Niese is still an unproven rookie with 8 career starts. Garland is a 4.4 career ERA and averages 200 innings and 13 wins a season. No, he's not a number 1, but he's easily a 3 or 4. Still my choice with Sheets gone. I'd rather have Niese as a fill in for DLs (not that the Mets will have any of those -- LOL) and let him grow as a starter.

Maybe we can get Clemens to juice up and try it one more time? Seriously, I'm bumming over the Sheets miss. I know it wasn't a lock that he'd stay healthy, but just like buying that lottery ticket at least you have a hope. Now? Ugh....

The 'Ropolitans : Your 2010 Mets rotation (as of right now)

Any good free agents available next year? This rotation won't make it. I think a 85 win season would be a success with this crew. Ohhhh, and I'm usually so optimistic. This lack of getting a pitcher is killing me.

The 'Ropolitans : Twitter Poll: Which free-agent starters would you like to see on the Mets?

Even if this were the way to go, NOW is not the time. Let's see where the Mets are mid-way through the season and if they are out of the race then it might be time to look at selling off the assets for some youth. BTW, personally I think Sheets upside is closer to 15-16 wins IF he is healthy and if the offense is playing up to its potential. Don't get me wrong, I think more likely would be a 12-14 win season, but I think if he had a amazing season it would happen. Also, saying that three guys can get you the same number of wins as Santana isn't really a good argument, because the three of them combined might need twice as many starts as Santana to get those wins.

What you say makes sense, BUT... I really don't think they'll have enough with just an innings eater like Garland. If they really want to make a push for the playoffs, they're going to need to gamble a little.... even with the chance that a Sheets signing could backfire.

Anything at this point. I'm tired of waiting. I guess Sheets. Garland is a work horse if you look at his numbers. But his upside is nothing close to Sheets.
