I see both sides here. One is a band aid for this year, the other is a disservice to the kids education. Unless it starts growing on trees there is not going to be an easy solution.

I believe that the general tone here is that they dont want anyone to know who is commenting therefore removing all accountability. I think its a great move, one that will bring back true discussion by those of us willing to stand up for what we believe.

Living a lie? If no one asked him if he was a felon how is that a lie? Did the school board ask him? Yes, he voted illegally and for that he should be punished. $1250 would disappear into salaries for cops, equipment, cars, training, insurance, logistics, dispatch, management, and facilities to house all that. I know it seems like its a lot left over, but really when you break down the numbers (8760 hours in a year, $$ per hour it costs to put feet on ground, time spent on call) it ends up (not exact on my math here) pennies per ticket.... It would have to be something like an automated system (see speed cameras, lol) for it to make money. Business opp here maybe?

I could not agree more and congrats on making a change. People today would rather rant and let someone else do the work, then rant when it doesn't get done. Its become so bad that when congress simply did their jobs, poorly at that, they were congratulated for it!! THATS THEIR JOB!!! They wanted a cookie for doing what was expected of them and for what they signed up to do! I think the old saying is too many chiefs and not enough indians, but then Im not being PC either...

I know and it seems to be just so unbalanced when you put it that way. The only thing I ever come up with in discussing this is that a military person of that age makes even fewer decisions on their own than one not in the military. And I guess that logic says that they are even less capable of making those choices about when to stop and what to do when under the influence. On the other hand, they are fighting for us and should be allowed to have a drink since they are dying to defend our rights.

So since they are responsible enough to break the law and choose to binge drink, " A 19 year old is more likely in my opinion to become a binge drinker if they are sneaking around to drink." we should reward that by making it legal so they wont drink? "How they handle those situations depends more on their upbringing than whether or not it's legal to drink at that age" If that were the case then we wouldn't be having this conversation at all since all parents should in fact raise their children with at least the elementary understanding that breaking the law is bad and you shouldn't do that. Those kids who have had your version of an upbringing are not the ones breaking the law and don't have a problem with this. You should probably take a look at the city budget in Iowa city alone, get a little better grasp on how a budget works and then make a comment about how a paula tickets are a great source of revenue because it just doesn't work out that way. " I find it hard to believe that there is more administration cost involved in a Paula ticket than there is for a speeding ticket, yet they are twice the price." Hopefully to act as a deterrent, and because more often than not its a juvi court case and requires more actions than just pay the fine. The stats from IC show rapid declines in those numbers, so they are going to continue the practice until the evidence proves otherwise. I'm not sure what direction it will go, but until then it is going to be wildly debated topic. Wasn't there a study or something about lowering the drinking age nationally? What happened to that?

An 18 year old soldier is told when to do everything, where, and how. An 18 year old soldier has practically every single decision made for them, so saying they should be allowed to get drunk is not in theirs or the publics best interest and an argument stating that is counter productive.
