Silas Marner was the first novel we read in high school English. What is to be made of the fable? The moral has something to do with the love of a person overcoming the love of money. The theme could be that the love of money is evil. Surely, that could be considered partisan doctrine given the criticism of the recent Muppets Movies.
We also read The Scarlet Letter (portrays moralistic Puritans in a bad light, one of the main characters is a hypocritical clergyman, could be viewed as antisocial conservative), A Separate Peace (It seemed anti-war at the time), Animal House (Marxist / Anti-Marxist -- you tell me), anything written by Mark Twain, Sinclair Lewis, Tennesse Williams, or just about anything since the 1950's.
The language that describes the forbidden conduct seems vague enough to sanitize most of English and American literature.
