Here is a fresh take on the "should student athletes be paid" argument: http://www.statecollege.com/news/columns/jay-pate... It is a Penn State article by Jay Paterno (JoePa's son and assistant) and the gist of it is that football players make between $56 and $83 an hour at Penn State when you factor in the cost of tuition and added covered expenses like books and room and board and the total number of hours they are allowed to devote in the year to football (NCAA limits it quite a bit actually). So they make out pretty well as it is for their roles as "entertainers". Throw in the typically high quality healthcare that they get and it is even higher. Haven't seen that argument laid out before and I have to say that it has solidified my thoughts on the subject. Athletes do get paid to play. Quite well actually.

My thoughts on this are that, for the moment anyway, I don't see Ohio State pulling out at this point. It would be bad PR and tell the team that they don't believe in them enough to play CU even in front of the home crowd. Not exactly a good way to woo potential new coaches by losing the team in the 4th game of the season. Also, OSU doesn't owe Tressel any buyout. He gave them plenty of reason for cause. They save more than the game would cost them in the difference between what his salary would have been and what the fill in guy will make.

Unfortunately won't happen. The PAC10/12 has a clause in their bylaws that players can't transfer from one conference team to another. CU wasn't in the PAC10 last year so we were ok accepting Travon Patterson. Next season CU will be in the PAC12 so no transfers from other PAC12 teams. I don't think any other conference has this policy but I actually think it makes sense.

Except that the PAC charter says that players can't leave one conference team for another. CU wasn't in the conference last year so we could accept USC players then. Otherwise that would have been a good plan. I don't know of any other conference with that transfer rule. But it does kind of make sense.

I think a National Championship is a reasonable goal. Not in the next year or two but within 5 yrs or so for sure (not for sure to win but for sure to be in the running year in and year out). If you don't set your sights on the top you will never get there.

Byron White is and I think the Anderson brothers (or maybe just one) are in. Rashaan and Kordell are not. I don't think they are eligible yet (not enough time since they left school).

Why exactly are so many folks so sure that the Buffaloes are going to get pushed around in the Pac-12 next year? Sure, they got pummelled at California, 52-7, but use schizophrenic California as a measuring stick at your own risk. Colorado also beat some good teams -- Hawaii, Georgia and Kansas State -- and finished one win short of bowl eligibility. Two losses were by a total of nine points, and, of course, there was that epic collapse against Kansas. So things could have been different in 2010, a season that cost Dan Hawkins his job. The Buffaloes have 14 starters back in 2011, including a veteran QB (Tyler Hansen) and a 1,000-yard rusher (Rodney Stewart). They also have an impressive young receiver (Paul Richardson), an NFL prospect on an experienced offensive line (guard Ryan Miller) and a key starter returning from injury (linebacker Jon Major). Further, they figure to be highly motivated for three reasons: 1. They will seethe over a lack of respect; 2. They will be energized by new coach Jon Embree; 3. They will be fired up for playing in the new Pac-12. Biggest reason for concern: The secondary looks shaky. Colorado started two cornerbacks last fall, Jimmy Smith and Jalil Brown, who were NFL draft picks, yet they somehow were terrible against the pass. They ranked 112th in the nation in pass-efficiency defense, with opponents throwing 27 TD passes, which would have ranked ninth in the Pac-10 in 2010. Even more stunning: Opponents completed 68 percent of their passes against Colorado. That would have ranked last in the conference. Injuries were an issue, but that doesn't obscure the fact that Smith and Brown are now gone and it's unclear who will replace them. Two players listed No. 1 on the post-spring depth chart, cornerback Parker Orms -- a safety last year before blowing out his knee -- and strong safety Anthony Perkins, missed spring with knee injuries. Toss in the quality of quarterbacks in the Pac-12, and questions in the secondary are grounds for concern.
