Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : #188. Judging someone's faith based on their Bible underlining.

i remember attending a youth church camp very soon after i made the decision to properly get going with a relationship with god. the key speaker was quite a well known guy from planetshakers, i think, and kept going on about how he never signed a bible (apparently that's what quasi-famous youth pastors from australia do on a regular basis) if it was 'clean' i.e. unwritten i/on. my baby christian self looked down at my brand new bible i had bought the day before in anticipation of the event, as clean and shiny as a new bible could ever hope to be. and Jesus Wept. no he didn't, and neither did i, but i felt distinctly crestfallen. i wouldn't have even thought to ask the guy to sign my bible had he not brought it up in the first place.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : #149. Boycotting stuff.

i remember when the golden compass came out, i went and saw it having not read the books and thought it was a bit of all right. my grandmother, who i wouldn't necessarily say is a christian, although she goes to church on christmas eve and occasionally easter, e-mailed me and said she'd been told by other people who also hadn't seen it that it was very Evil with a capital E and to make sure i didn't go. unfortunately, by that time it was TOO LATE. i had to repent with sackcloth and ashes. i mean, thank goodness someone told me it was Evil, i might not have noticed. the thing about christians boycotting stuff is rarely if ever do the majority bother to find out for themselves why they should boycott the thing in question. it's not so much a personal Up Yours to the Establishment as a i will jump on this band-wagon in case i go to hell for this later. i mean, my grandmother had no idea what the golden compass even was. love your post about harry potter by the way. love it.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : #56. Talking to strangers on airplanes.

I know Erwin McManus is a big fan of this, or at least, he mentions it occasionally in his podcasts. I'm all for people doing this; it certainly beats the pants off Christian mega-pastor-preacher-speakers who have their own private jets and so many speaking engagements that the only time they would ever have to personally engage with those who don't profess to know Christ (how I loathe the term 'non-Christian') in anything resembling a meaningful way, would be on a plane. But they can't. Because they went and bought their own plane so they wouldn't have to. Oh the irony. And yes, I realize that is a very long sentence. Peace and love from New Zealand
