/Film : Pixar's Up - What Did You Think?

***Mild spoilers*** Just got back from seeing this in Digital 3D. While it wasn't as visually impressive as the 3D in Coraline, it was amazing how Pixar was able to to really make the audience feel the depth of the landscapes. The chase sequence was also absolutely incredible to watch. Once again, Pixar has created a film that transcends all ages and genres. Kids and adults can enjoy this film right alongside each other. While this didn't have as many laugh out loud moments as past Pixar films, UP was much, much more emotional and really was grounded in the a pure love story from beginning to end. I think that focusing on the physics of the film, or how Carl all of a sudden becomes an action hero, really takes away from the feeling this film leaves you with. Rarely have I sat through an entire movie where there was a smile on my face from beginning to end. It was so thoroughly enjoyable that I didn't even think about how Carl had the strength to hold onto a bird, a dog and a kid with just a water hose. While this movie was much more grounded in reality than past Pixar films, it's still a fantastical adventure and must be viewed as such. While I didn't think that a movie could ever be more perfect than Wall-E, UP has now become my favorite Pixar movie yet. 10 out of 10

/Film : The Commercials of Carl Erik Rinsch

This guy is one of the most talented commercial directors in the industry. He's innovative and creative. Why not use his skills to launch an entirely new, ORIGINAL franchise, one that pushes the envelope just like Alien did thirty years ago? Oh yeah, that's right it's Fox and it's Hollywood. They are too damn lazy to put the effort into trying something new and would rather hope for the easy money that comes with "rebooting" an established series, and making it "gritty" and "realistic". While it was a great movie, but I fear that The Dark Knight may have actually made Hollywood even worse than it was before.

/Film : This Week in DVD: W., Miracle at St. Anna, Blindness, My Name is Bruce, and More

I saw this movie at it's NYC premiere. Martin Scorcese started out sitting right behind me. He left halfway through. It's a powerful story that didn't need all the racism thrown in your face. Just let the movie do the talking on its own. It also felt like they decided that every single thing they shot needed to be in the film. I doubt there will be a deleted scenes feature on the DVD.

It will be interesting to see just how brutal and graphic this movie is compared to the original. The gang in the original movie was no name actors, and it seemed very real, almost as if it was filmed as it happened. But I doubt they include the penis biting, or the forced lesbian rape (which was very creepy). The movie was just downright brutal from beginning to end.

That being said, this film looks pretty damn good. Of course, trailers can be cut to maximize the effect but it's obvious the filmmakers care greatly about the source material and doing it justice, and not being thrown in with generic remake crowd. And Garret Dillahunt is a GREAT actor, and excellent at understated, creepy villian roles. He played about 4 different characters on Deadwood and is now starting to get some juicy roles in film.

I think this could be one of those movies that is absolutely like nothing that has come before it, and I love how it seems everyone involved is just having the time of their lives. I also think that without Jason Stratham this movie wouldn't get a second glance, but I think that this kind of role is exactly what he's good at. I also love the behind the scenes take at the end.

On the topic of the actual footage: I would say what worried me most heading into the movie was how the characters would actually interact, how the dialogue would come across. Everything we saw in the beginning was just a bunch of fancy and cool images and small sections of the movie set to a great song. This clip made me feel much better about the movie as a whole, and gave me hope that even the little things will get pulled off successfully.

/Film : Watchmen: Warner Bros says "Settlement Unlikely"

While I'm not as....eloquent....as StarBlazer above, I do agree that the fact that its Fox blocking this movie just makes the whole thing that much more hard to swallow. Fox hasn't been able to get out of it's own way lately and has done nothing but develop flop after flop. Now that another studio actually succeeded in doing what they never could, produce a respected movie version of Watchmen, they are the proverbial spoiled kid in the corner crying foul. The fact that this movie is sure to be a blockbuster if it is good is the only reason this is going to court. I am certain there are many properties each year that are made under another studio after years of failing somewhere else. This one just happens to be one of the most popular movies heading into 2009.

I must admit that while I wasn't blown away by TF1, and I am reeaaallllly not a big fan of Michael Bay, I might actually like this one. I am encouraged by reports they are evening out the focus on humans and bots (I thought there wasn't enough actual Transformers in the movie other than action sequences), and also holding back on some of the forced humor. The one thing that was great about TF1 was the action, so if that's what there is going to be more of in TF2, I'm all for it.

Obviously it's easy to judge a movie based solely on its trailer....but after being initially skeptical about the project to start with (after the monstrosity called X3 came out I was just about done with X-Men) I actually feel myself starting to look forward to this movie. I agree that Liev Shriber isn't the burliest Sabretooth, but I would rather have great acting and love for the role over physical likeness any day.
