Actually, if part of the site were used for Costco, it would save Boulder residents the 16 mile round trip to Superior, significantly reduce vehicle emissions and traffic on US 36, and generate millions of dollars of tax revenues for the city.

It is clear from George Karakehian’s actions on the city council that he feels his responsibility is to his pocketbook and to that of his partner mega-developer Stephen Tebo.

Of course Karakehian would be opposed to the ballot initiatives as one would give more power to residents and neighborhoods and the other would make developers pay a fair share of the municipal infrastructure needed to support new developments.

But it doesn’t say much about Karakehian’s integrity and character for him to lie to the public about the initiatives.

The recent “right-sizing” debacle where Iris, a major arterial carrying 23,500 vehicles a day, was downsized from two lanes in each direction to one to make room for a handful of bicycles, gave me a new insight into how the city council makes decisions based on “preferred visions” instead of hard data and reality.

Frankly, there is not a single person of the Boulder City Council, which will act as the board of directors of the electric utility, qualified to hold such a position.

Because of a poor understanding of the complexities of separating Boulder from the rest of Xcel’s grid and a poor understanding of the laws and federal and state regulations governing electric utilities, the project is way behind schedule and over budget. I originally voted in favor of municipalization, but I sure wish I had the opportunity to vote again on the project.

A decision to down-size Iris is reversible, but once a municipal electric utility is formed, we will be stuck with it forever.

Yes, of course the city’s official spinmeister would say there are no problems with the plans, and AMR wants to keep its contract and not make any political waves, but nothing in the story you link to answers the serious questions raised in the letter to the editor. And if response times increased by one minute, no one would know except the person suffering a heart attack or watching their house burn down.

Yes, and city's official term for impeding traffic and making sure there is insufficient parking is "TDM",- Traffic Demand Management. This goes hand-in-hand with the high density kennels being built at the Transit Center so workers can bus to work on our congested streets. The city's Transportation Advisory Board, which unanimously recommended reducing auto lanes on four major arterials, is stacked with anti-car ideologues, as is the city's transportation department.

Snow and ice will not slow traffic on streets such as Folsom and Iris. Just ask Dave Kemp, the city’s “Senior Transportation Engineer” on the right-sizing project. When asked how snow will affect the results of the computer model which predicts removing auto lanes will not create traffic problems, he stated “we have snow removal”. When told there are days when roads are icy and snow-packed and traffic will slow down, he said “that’s just an assumption”. Check out his last job:

It's time for the city to "right-size" the Go Boulder section of the city government.

Did you say you "drive"? If you do drive, you are contributing to global warming and the destruction of the planet, and your opinion does not count.

Stephen,
Go Boulder, the city's anti-car group in charge of this project could have chosen to improve the existing multi-use concrete path along the north side of Iris, but it did not because that would not have decreased the number of auto lanes and produced the desired increase in traffic congestion. If you want to be safe, ride in the path along the north side of Iris and not on the roadway alongside distracted drivers.

In the 1980's when Table Mesa was widened from Table Mesa to US 36, at the requests of cyclists wide bike lanes were installed instead of left turn lanes for motorists. There has been no increase by cyclists on that road. In fact last Thursday while waiting 15 minutes for a bus at 8:10 in the morning, I counted ZERO cyclists on that road.

Likewise, in 2010 the city spent $6.1 million on widening bike lanes along 30th from Pearl to Arapahoe and building an unnecessary bike underpass to nowhere. Cycling on 30th has not increased. Drive 30th and you will see thousands of cars and a handful o bikes. I cycle all of the time all over Boulder, but the city's expensive Go Boulder program, in spite of their bogus statistics, is a big failure. Wait until the first snow storm to see the mess "right-sizing" will create on Iris.
