And what you're ignoring is the fact that there have been several mass extinctions over the 4.5 billion years this planet has existed. Therefore, it is quite possible to have the scenario you describe above. The last big "die-off" happened lass than 15K years ago which is why you don't see any more saber tooth tigers or mastodons, among numerous others.

In closing, the answer to your question about my standard for the understanding the universe is science. The standard for how I live my life and interact with others is the Holy Bible. There is no doubt in my mind that God, quite literally, created the Heavens and the Earth. I'd just like to know how He did it and what all the physical rules are for exisiting and exploring here. And with all due respect to the thousands of scholars who have spent lifetimes working on these texts, I'll take a state of the art laboratory or science lab to answer my questions about the physical makeup of our universe and\\or multiverse over the philosophy or musings of someone from two to five millenia ago.

Religion and common sense do not have to be mutually exclusive, IMHO, Skeeve. The Holy Bible is something I believe in as part of my religion, Catholicism, however a literal, word for word, interpretation is something I cannot intellectually sign on to. The Holy Bible was written by men interpreting various ancient texts. Too many times we have seen people in power use religion as a means of controlling people. Our current conflicts with those who practice radical Islam is a prime example as are the so-called Jesus camps where kids are brainwashed into being killers and are taught that anyone who is not Christian should be killed or converted. The answer to that from most devout theologians is that our Faith should have us believe that these men who put together the current canon were influenced by the Holy Spirit and thus above reproach. While I cannot dispute the whole of the work, when unimpeachable evidence is presented that disputes or clarifies portions of the Holy Bible's content it cannot be ignored.
