15 years ago @ World In Conversation - Would you hire illegal... · 0 replies · 0 points

This is a good question.
I think the majority of the population are doing it already! and they do not mind doing it again and again.

I will do it and I do not even mind as I can not see anything wrong with it. Illegal immigrants are people looking for me. They do exist in this country and will exist for the longest time. From the videos we saw in class on Tuesday, we can see clearly that this country is built on illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants now, will be U.S. citizens after two generations and therefore will represent part of the population. Because they are working in the country does not change this fact that they will have all rights in few generations.
Two things that any employer is trying to find in his employees: Price, and Commitment. Illegal immigrants excel at both of those aspects. They provide very cheap labor, and they are hard workers.

I do not feel bad if I pay an illegal immigrant, because I do not feel like i am robbing him. Yes I am paying him a cheaper price, but this is a supply and demand issue. If the prices is satisfying for both parties then no one can object. The fact that there are no laws to protect him, and there are not laws to protect me are included in the prices. As we all know the risks of hiring an illegal immigrant, you pay for what you get. Sometimes it could be worth taking the risk sometimes its not. For example, you might hire a construction worker with insurance and he ruin part of your house while on the job, but he is covered so you do not have to worry about him. But when it is an illegal immigrant and he blows part of your house, then you are in trouble because you cannot sue him and you know he cannot cover the damages.

So what If no one pays them? what if no one is hiring them to do any job?
What would happen?
Are we going to eliminate the problem of immigration?
No Way. Those people are running away from oppressing regimes and poverty. If they live free in this country but still in poverty it would still be better for them than going back. They will still try to come here thinking that america is the land of opportunity and happiness. Thinking that maybe, just maybe, they will get lucky and start building hopes upon that.
If they were not paid, they will resolve to illegal activities such as drug dealing and trafficking, enrolling in gangs, etc. Do we really want that to happen?
Some of those immigrants will have nothing to lose, going to jail while having free lodging and food might be better than the conditions they've been experiencing.
We have to worry about the consequences before taking any stupid measurement.

The only way to stop illegal immigrants from coming into the country is beat them in their own strategy. Competition. Compete with them at low prices, and show the same amount of commitment and hard work. If this is accomplished, then people will rather make deals with people without taking any risks. The risk factor when dealing with an illegal immigrant is a card that "legal" workers have to emphasize and adjust their prices upon it. A study of the illegal immigrants markets, prices, and hours is crucial for legal workers to be able to compete in the ruthless market of labor.

I'm glad everyone in class enjoyed it, not just me, 'the international student' in the class. Even American students liked it because first it reminded them of their childhood, and secondly it was changed from the original game (or expanded a little bit). I've read about it and saw that in the original kids game, the first kid or child whispers something to the next kid, and then that kid does the same thing to the next. This happens like a dozen times until we finally see that what was originally whispered was changed drastically in a hysterical way. The difference between the original game and what we did in class is that we used a whole story (that includes various scenes), while the original game only dealt with a sentence or a phrase. Another difference is that in the original we only see the beginning and the end result, but in class we experienced the change as it was happening, which was really funny. I thought the telephone game activity done in class was extremely funny and interesting. It was just amazing entertainment. I was reading the comments to this video and saw that everybody was already familiar with this game, and that most people have played this game in elementary school or while still being kids in general. I thought that was weird because I have never heard of this game and this was my first encounter with it. But then again I'm not native American so maybe it's not that surprising. Moving away from the fact that it was very entertaining and enjoyable, the game does illustrate something very important. I think the answer to the question 'why does information travel that way?' is that because it is more convenient! We immediately saw the first girl not using the 'N' word when telling the story. I don't remember exactly but she probably said that 'the white man said some mean things' or something like that; she only said that because in her mind it was more convenient. Maybe that was okay if the story was only told between two people, but unfortunately for us that leads to miscommunication when we keep doing it on a larger scale. I guess that's because everybody's trying to be convenient in their own way. I think it's also because that when someone tells the story, he/she is not telling something very clear, and so the other person assumes that the last person meant this. As a result of all of that, I noticed for example the 'next Monday' in the original story become 'two weeks later' by the time it reached the last person.

After hearing this lecture I have learned that it is because men and women’s bodies work very differently, and they perceive sex very differently. Women have a very emotional connection with sex whereas for men it can be a completely emotionless act. This was interesting to think about in the context of how the world perceives sex. In everything that we see sex is always fast and passionate with two mutual orgasms. As we have learned this is not the case. I found the data that they showed us to be pretty shocking when it came to the amount of orgasms women have had. This shows that sex in our world is just about the man getting his. If I took anything from this lecture it is that to have a successful relationship, men must take the time to understand women and how their bodies work.
We, guys, are always asking for it, sex. We do stupid things and very intruding on girls when we are acting "needy". Yes, we know they do it for us. But, we always have this idea that they are saying No just because they are shy, or because they want to people to ask them more for it to feel more secured and "wanted".
I never once thought that this was out of the ordinary - it is something that I have always seen. The fact that this occurs from male influence and point of view is probably why I have never questioned it much. If females do step back to take a look at these actions, I am sure they can easily justify that it is because this male imaged culture tells us to do so - however, it has become so deep in us and the culture that it is perceived as normally and many do not think twice about acting this way. I think this is why many girls fall into the thoughts that they must be what guys perceive them to be - which is unnecessary and untrue. This point led me to find the public service announcements very important and intriguing. We hear them all the time, but the background Sam and his wife gave made them more realistic and easily understandable.
Females should think make it more clear. It is their responsibility to "teach" guys and stop hiding and faking it. This will lead to a "balanced" world. Because if they do not talk about it, guys would not even try to end this, It is to our advantage! We, honestly, would love to see this going on for ages and generations. This is our time, I guess. The world does not revolve around guys only, awareness should be spread among both genders.

15 years ago @ World In Conversation - Religion in the future? · 0 replies · +2 points

This idea of religion dying is not very true. The study is focused on few countries, and few regions. There are a lot of religions other than Christianity. The fact that 10 western countries are reporting themselves as Atheist doesn't mean that religion is going to dye in the whole planet. In the Netherlands, for example, all government policies are focused in wiping out religions morals. It does not try to keep or carry the basic needs for churches to run or operate.
We live in the Entertainment Era. This kind of life style that is being broadcasted out of the tube is shifting interests further away from religion and GOD. Sins are being advertised on National TVs and people are being paid to commit them!
In Islam, there's a "Hadith" (Prophets Mohammed's, peace be upon him recorded words) that states: In the future, Taking care of your religion and religious duties will be as hard as holding a piece of ember.
Religion might be "fading" but it is not dying. It will never die. All along history, religion has its ups and downs, but it never dies. If we can learn anything from religion and people, is that when people are in any sort or a problem or in a crisis, they always go to GOD and ask for forgiveness and help. When people are faced with natural disasters, people get to be more religious and head to mosques and churches.

Religion isn't "dying" per se. It is losing its credibility and its relevance as a stand-alone power, especially in Western countries, but it is far from "dying."
Look around. 90% of the population still believes in the tenets of their background beliefs. More than that believe in some sort of "higher power." Even more agree that religion is a moral compass for society.
Secularization has reduced religion to much less than it was, to be sure. That is, the institution of religion. Belief is still there, and support is still there. Religion has just adapted to a much more passive role in people's lives. Doesn't mean its gone, and doesn't mean its dying. Just means its adapted to the current situation its faced with.

The argument of Evolution proving religion is wrong and therefore should not exist is completely false. As a Muslim geologist I have explored this subject in depth. Evolution is a fact. It is not a theory. However, It does not contradict religion. It does not contradict Creation! I do not want to get so technical here, but in order for evolution to work, all necessary elements had to exist about 2.6 billion years ago in order for the first sign of life to appear. The atmosphere, the oceans, oxygen, and RNA were all in perfect levels, and all the cycles of the planet were born. All life and earthly process are a piece of MAGIC, they are so precise and so efficient that could never be the work of a coincidence. GOD created this beautiful system of evolution, a system that is self sufficient and could fix its own mistakes. The more I go in depth in the evolution theory, the more I believe in God and get more amazed of the beauty of this system he set for us. Science and religion they go hand to hand, they are not against each others.

White privilege.
Does it exist?
Yes it does.

Two years ago, I was in Red Lodge, Montana. I must have been the darkest person in a 300 miles radius. Late at night, I go with my American "white" friends to the bars to have a good time. I got into the place early and it was not packed, and people were not drunk yet. Everyone acted normally. Later that night, we went to another bar across the street. Once I got into the bar, everyone .. and I mean EVERYONE was staring at me. Fine! I went and ordered myself a drink, and I can still feel some people still staring, so I sit on my stool and face the people who are looking at me, and I start staring at them. It was like I had my own audience! I had a staring contest with one guy for about 2 minutes, until I gestured with my hands what exactly do you want, then he stopped looking.
One of my white friends kept us protected and prevented many fights that day! He kept telling them he's in the Army and he was in Iraq and back, and I'm like his brother. So because of their respect to the Army, they did not do anything.
But once he went to the bathroom, a lady come to me and was trying to strangle me, and kept asking me "WHAT ARE YOU? PAKI? ARAB? WHAT ARE YOU?" So i just pushed her away and walked out the bar. Another person came to me and apologized and said the women was wasted.

My reaction was: It happens! There are some people who act in a certain way, especially those who weren't exposed to different races. They did not get a chance to know people from different races or interact with them. But we always point the finger to Whites? white power, white privilege? KKK? Nazis?

Do you think whites are the only people that feel "privileged" ? Do you think they are the only people who discriminate? Do you think they are the only people who are racist against other people? Do you think all the people of the world think they are on Top of the ladder? Don't you think there got to be other races who think that they are on the top, and they look down at all other races?

Many other groups think they are the best race in the world!
We Arabs think we are the best. We are the top level of the races pyramid. We discriminate a lot against foreigners who come to our country. Especially Indian, and bangaly workers. Kids throw eggs on them, and they can not do anything, they spit, curse, and sometimes even hit them. If those people go to the police station, the Arab person will be right, and the Indian will probably end up in jail, or maybe they would let him ago telling him we will get your right later on but never do.

People feel privileged over different races all over the world! I understand that. It is not only white. When I am here in the states and get discriminated against, it gives me the opportunity to put myself in the Indian shoes back home. Now I can feel some of what they go through, so whenever I go back to my country, I try my best to treat them with all respect.

My point is: Whites are not the only racist group in the world. Not even close!

The conflict between palastine and Israel is a very sophisticated one. This is due to the
historic roots of the conflict, as it goes all the way back to the "Land of Kanana" and
the "Temple of Solomon" days. The gap between the two fighting nations, muslims and
jewish, is increasing with time. New generations of both sides are being fed as they are
raised to "hate" the opposite side. Hatred is a very suitable word to use in this situation.
It is not only the extremists of each side whose hating, it is also the uneducated and the
blind. In my own estimate, those "hate groups" represents the majority of Palestinians
and Israelis. The group that adopts unity and coexistence is a minority.

A clear and open mind is the essence of adopting such a position. A mind that admits
one's mistakes, and forgives the other's miss happenings. To do that, each side has to
think about the reasons behind their actions, and other sides actions. It is clear and
obvious that all holy religions have deep roots in Jerusalem. No one religion have the full
right to conquer that city. Any mono religion power in Jerusalem will result in endless
wars. The irony is that both sides of the war will be fighting "In the Name of God", the
same God who sent the prophets Moses, Jesus, and Mohammed peace be upon them all.

All holy religions in their core teachings are all about peace, acceptance, and forgiveness.
We are in a world now that those teaching have been distorted. Hate and wars has been
fueling religions rather than love and peace. However, this level of open mind is harder
to conceive by older generations who already suffered from the wars. So, to reach unity
and coexistence in the holy land, acceptance should be taught in schools at a young age.
Acceptance should be taught to our kids as part of teaching religions. History should be
studied from an unbiased prospective rather than it being a study of pointing fingers and
identifying villains and victims.

This can not happen over night nor its effects will take part in a matter of months. It will
take at least 60 more years in conflict, or maybe just perhaps it takes way less than that if
both parties unite against a common enemy. However, strong and determined leadership
will make this happen. War, is not the only solution. War, in fact, is never a "solution".
If it was the solution, then palastine would have been worry free since crusaders. The
minority coexistence group of both sides have been very proactive, but no really critical
actions have been taken yet. We do not see any major steps in the peace talks between the
two nations. This proves that leaders of both nations are using the wrong strategy to reach
a solution. Or, non of them is willing to make sacrifices, which is a very hard thing to do.
With time, and proper education we might be able to live to see an impossible conflict
resolved.

Karim,

"Ignorance and Stupidity blinds us"

Yes, we might be part of the elite who are educated. It does not matter how much information we know. It does not matter how much information we will learn in our college life. What matters is how we conceive those information and how we react upon learning about new things.
Some people are very educated about certain places but they are still closed minded. Other people got little knowledge about the world around them but are very accepting and open minded.
Ignorance is when people make up excuse to care only about themselves. Ignorance is when people think that world is revolving around them. Ignorance is, for me at least, a high level of selfishness.

So, what is worse? knowing something and not acting upon it? Knowing that there are slaves but staying still and "ignore" it? or Not knowing it at all? Not knowing at all, therefore you have no reactions toward the subject?
Not knowing in my opinion is better.
Many people would learn a lot about extreme things occurring in the world, but with their arrogant attitude they neglect responsibility towards other people.
Slavery is happening around the world, even when people are underpaid it is some sort of of slavery. If you do not know about it, maybe you'll end up not buying anything. Whether or not you buy something produced by slavery, you have to appreciate what those people are doing for you to live a comfortable life. We, humans, should take care of one another as we are together in this planet. Selfishness could be the reason of our destruction.

Yes, you can say: "Hey dont blame me, I did not know". But you had all the tools to learn about the subject and you did not. This means you share some of the blame.

Either ways,
what is the solution to impact the world and change rules and regulations? is it even possible? One step at a time. Acknowledging that we have a problem is the first step. Then, we have to raise awareness about those poor people. The final step is to STOP the injustice.
The capitalism world is a world that neglect human nature of being good and urges you to cross all redline to step on peoples' dignity and freedom. We are sacrificing our brothers just to get things cheaper for few dollars. we are killing them. We are the reason for that.

Karim, some people are gaining huge profits out of people ignorance. As long as that keeps happening it will be so hard to educate people about the corruption they are doing. Media is directing people toward being ignorant about specific stuff so that the people in charge of the media could carry out doing their illegal stuff.

"He who's not scared of the punishment, behaves badly" - Arabic proverb

I have always known about the subsidies farmers get, however, I never thought subsidies are part of "welfare". From an economic prospective, subsidies increase the "dead weight loss", which mean that the society in the long term loses money, but corporations are better off. One of the worst subsidies is for corn farmers, as they want their corn to produce fuels and spend more money on the process that what they are getting. They also produce more greenhouse gases during the whole process of growing the corn and transferring it to fuel compared to the gases produced in a Natural Gas plant. Those are facts! People know this, but as you said Sam; people who speak the truth are usually crushed.

When you mentioned this in class, the first thing that popped in my head was the BAILOUT money. The bailout was literally a joke. When the people who actually loss their money because of greedy bankers, are paying them to get back on their feet again. Imagine, someone robs your house, and then get sent to jail. Then we you go to the trial, the judge lets the robber keep the money he got from you, and force you to pay his debt, and basically "bail" him out of jail. The way the banking system is structured forces them to take on higher risks to get more profits. That's not the problem, the problem is they are paying the salaries of the people rating the risks they are taking, the more lenient rating they give, the more profits for the bank, more money for the rating agencies. Everyone's happy, except the investor, and of course .. you should not be happy either as you are not getting a piece of the pie! All banks who received bailout money are now reporting record profits. This was probably the best deal they ever made in history. In every business deal there's a winner and a loser. In this case, you are the loser.

I see the middle class of this country struggling, I see them being crushed and squeezed. The amount of hard work and dedication they have should earn them more than what they are getting now. Deceived and controlled, remotely controlled robots, blinded by promises and meaningless values; are this country's middle class men. Debt cycles and mortgage rates are occupying their minds day and night. So what do the higher-class people do? They make those debt settlement companies, to squeeze those couple of pennies they have left before they final bankruptcy.

The 2008 economic crisis investigation committee announced two weeks ago that the Federal Reserve Bank and Wal Street largest corporations are fully responsible for what happened. They clearly announced that they are the reason behind the whole economic downturn. The report unfortunately never suggested a punishment
for those who made mistakes. Are they going to trial? If yes, who can prosecute them?!

No one.
You'll see.

LOL! I can see the comedy behind this email!
Its not true, but you gotta admit it .. it is funny!
and yes I am a muslim!
Anyways, what people have to realize and especially muslims, that different races will always make fun of each others. When a comedian make fun of someone else, he would not make fun of his regular normal behavior, but will emphasize the abnormal extreme actions. It is the nature of human behavior. We muslims will make fun of how soft and sissy americans or white people are. Is that true most of the time? No! But its funny nonetheless.
People of "the west" always pick on suicide bombing. I am against killing or harming people, whether they are civilians or soldiers if they never harmed you. Every "Jihad" should always be self defense. However, put your self in a suicide bomber shoes; think about it. What would make you kill yourself? forget about the promises you see on Comedy Central about the 70 virgen, Its just very ignorant. People kill themselves for a case, for a belief, for a deep respect to one's ideologies. Why would someone even have to kill him self to prove a point? Why? What kind of life of oppression have you lived to commit such a thing? How much hate and anger you have against your enemies?
Have you ever thought that all this hate and anger is actually raised because of actions of their enemies? What kind of actions would intimidate someone to the point that he will end his life in order to show his anger? I dont know, but I bet you it is horribly wrong, and pretty much worth a great deal of reactions.

But you see, no one talks about why are those people killing themselves. They just talk about how stupid those people are for killing themselves and how they are doing this for "all the wrong reasons".

Yes, we get the "green light" to marry more than one woman. However, you have to be fair between your wives. Also, no woman is forced to marry a guy who's already married. It is her own personal choice. Women emotions are different than guys emotions. I'm a college student, and the way I view guys in college is the following: Guys want to have sex with the highest number of hot girls on campus. But girls on the other hand: they want to find the man of their dreams. Some men can financially and emotionally afford two or more women. Some ladies do not mind sharing their husband as long as they receive the attention they are looking for.
I believe rather than fighting those ignorant comments, we should raise to a higher level. Make fun of it, then explain the confusion around your group or ethnicity. This way, we will not only show our true identity of our majority, this way we could be friends and more accepting of each others.

15 years ago @ World In Conversation - Why Do We Associate Wi... · 0 replies · +1 points

From what I saw in State College in the past 5 years, it is weird when I see people of different ethnicity hanging out together, but the normal is when people from the same race are hanging out together. Why? as an international student I tell you that it happens naturally. I did not decide when I came here that I will hang out with people of my country and walk in packs. But I came here with my friends from that country, we're friends even before college. By now, they are my roommates and my brothers. We've been together through a lot and you get to the point that you understand the cultural evolution and transition that occurs to us coming here. We kind of raise a similar mentality. However, we are always open to hang out to other people of different races. We welcome any one. But it is tough to open up as much to someone who might be as understanding and aware of our situation and mentality.
