Winter Is Coming : GRRM: Blackfish not in first season

Thx Jodan! Sorry for the OT, but does any of you know how "Open ID" works? I have a Blogger account, so I should be able to log in to Open ID and comment on GRRM's blog, but... no way. I don't want to open a LiveJournal account, I have a million accounts already. Does the term "purists" have a negative connotation? I know that I've never considered myself a "purist", I try to keep an open mind, but when it's about my fave characters I seem to convert to "purism" immediately... it was the same with Harry Potter.

Edd, thx, it was me with the mystery knight, and the way you describe it makes it look even more awesome, especially if they manage to secure a recognizable actor. Of course we would be thoroughly spoiled before they even shot the scene, but I don't think the average HBO viewer lives on these boards day and night like we do :)

What if in Season 1 he appeared in the Whispering Woods, or elsewhere, as a kick-ass warrior in a black armour with a fish on top of his helmet? Sort of a mystery knight for the viewers (of course the characters know him). And only in Season 2 we see his face and discover who he is. This would cheer me up a lot after this heartbreaking piece of news ;)

Wow, it would be a stunning choice! LOST's "Desmond" can do fierce and anguished as no one else. Since we're talking about the "not appearing yet", Michael Fassbender http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1055413/ might also be considered for the role of some younger character, such as Beric or Edmure. He was born in Germany but I think his nationality is British or Irish.

LOL, that movie looks so trashy it must be lots of fun! I mean, Don Johnson and DeNiro??? I'd like to know whether Jeff plays a bad guy, and I'm not crazy about him with a beard, but THOSE EYES. Why, oh why isn't he British?

Winter Is Coming : Aidan Gillen is Littlefinger!

Ah, thanks, F&B, it seems they are not so distant after all. Petyr is described with some grey in his hair, and that probably will make the situation more believable, also considering that all the adults have been "aged". Still, I like the fact that Gillen also has a youthful face: it will make his scenes with Sansa *slighly* less creepy.

That's true, good insight. So the two categories would be related in the sense that they are polar opposites. Pity that (SPOILERS) Beric is dead for good, or so it seems, and I don't see UnCat having a great future. So... if this theory is true who will be the future "good zombies"? I have suddenly a very bad feeling about Brienne.

Thanks, Stella Maris! I love Jeremy Irons, but I find him too dour for the Blackfish. It may just be me, but Brynden seems like a very cheerful person - at least on the outside, because we all know he has some painful secret inside, which adds to his charm. I can't see Jeremy laughing at Jaime the way Brynden does in AFFC. But if we DO get him I'll be happy!

Some stunning names mentioned here! I especially like the idea of Max von Sydow as Aemon (but don't forget Christopher Plummer, he's Canadian but he can sound all kinds of British) and the "family resemblance" between Richard Chamberlain and Iain Glen. But now I need some help here. I've been running around in circles flapping my arms and saying we totally need a Blackfish. I'm at peace with him moved to Season 2 (not too much with him being cut) but I would like to have a name to support. I don't know much of British TV and theatre actors, and my favourite for the part (LOST's Jeff Fahey, born 1952, http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1233227520/nm0001194 ) is American. Can someone throw out some names so we can begin seriously canvassing for our favourite (?) Tully?

SPOILERS - When I read about Beric and then UnCat, I was intrigued by the possibility that they were somehow connected to the Others. I was beginning to see a new thread in the saga: sometimes death is not final (even though people are returned to an existence that is hardly human). Also, I saw the possiblility that the very existence of the Others was somehow due to the Red God's activities (or his servants'), just like Beric and UnCat's "resurrections". So the two zombie classifications in Westeros might not be unrelated after all.

I use Firefox and, when I open the comments, the collapsed threads sometimes open and sometimes they don't. I also have occasional problems with the jump-to. And I'd swear that sometimes I don't get the e-mail alert for threads I've subscribed to; and I think that to subscribe to a thread one has to comment, which is inconvenient. But I might be wrong on all of this, since I'm so terminally troutheaded. PS: sometimes I get moderated too, and I'm never sure whether my comment wil appear or not. I trust WiC to find a solution in good time. :)

One more age concern. Gillen was born in 1968. I can't find Michelle Fairley's age anywhere. He looks awfully younger than her. Isn't Petyr almost the same age as Cat? I can't see them flirting as teenagers, if she's already thinking of kisses and he's playing with the Westeros version of Transformers. Not to mention Lysa's crush on him. Is it possible that the whole Lysa-Cat-Petyr plot be scrapped? It would be really drastic because it would mean scrapping the Eyrie. Maybe. Anyway, I've never seen Gillen act, but his looks are spot-on with how I picture LF. Great casting all around. And thanks, WiC people, for keeping us informed! Every morning I check this site before the world news. :D

Winter Is Coming : Barristan the Bold on Board

Aemon is vital, I think, for the connection to the murky past of Westeros and the Targaryens, often alluded to but never fully brought out into the light. Still, I understand how Daenerys could fill the role of "historical memory" for the Targaryens. I do hope we get an Aemon sometimes... my perfect visual of him is Max Von Sydow in "Robin Hood" or Christopher Plummer in anything he's done lately.

Based on the last news we had on him, the Blackfish is EITHER completely disposable OR essential to the plot. We can't say which, because we don't know what GRRM has in store for the future. (SPOILERS) If his escape from Riverrun is comparable to the Gravedigger, he might very well be cut. I'd be satisfied with an open ending to his story and Sandor's story as they are now in AFFC. HOWEVER, he's just too cool to be overlooked. Please, HBO and GRRM. And how weird is it that I imagined Clint Eastwood as Brynden, rather than Barristan? And the fact that I imagine Brynden and Barristan fighting each other somewhere in future books?

Winter Is Coming : Conan talks GREGOR

LOL, thanks for the heads-up NOT to see his movie :D But in looks alone that's how I see Oberyn. An accomplished Middle-Eastern actor with those general looks and some dance training would work for me! At least that's the feel the GREGOR-Oberyn duel gave me. A choreography of death.

(SPOILER!) Hi Kelsey, Oberyn is at least forty-ish. It's been deduced somewhere, since he's ten years younger than his brother Doran. His first description is: "A Martell sun, but ten years too young... The princeling removed his helm. Beneath, his face was lined and saturnine, with thin arched brows above large eyes as black and shiny as pools of coal oil. Only a few streaks of silver marred the lustrous black hair that receded from his brow in a widow’s peak as sharply pointed as his nose." This said, I think Banderas would be a nice choice, he's exotic enough. But probably they will go for a less-known actor, and maybe even more exotic, or at least I hope so, to preserve Westeros' racial diversity. The closest living image I have of Oberyn is Joaquin Cortes, the flamenco dancer. He would also bring a fascinating dance quality to his duel with the Mountain.

Hello, Conan! I am new to your work but I can't wait to see you in action in what will certainly be a landmark series. Your "brother" is one of my favourite characters and I'm really glad he will have an awesome counterpart such as you. I love the thoughts you put into understanding what makes Ser Gregor tick, and I think you will make him one of my faves too! Please, do keep updating us about your reactions to the books and the TV series. It is an honour to have you sharing your thoughts with us. Good luck for everything!
