The founders had strict requirements on who was quailified to vote. Even then they chose not to form a democracy but a Constitutional Republic. A democracy will not work, for example, in a third world country where the majority of the voters are poor, ignorant unimformed, irresponsible citizens'. They will always vote for whoever promises to share the wealth. As a matter of fact whenever any country has less than 1% of the citizens' controling the majority of the wealth a revolt is likely. This generally occurs on forty to fifty year cycles as the hard working, industrious citizen'sget richer. This situation drives the politics and in an effort to share the wealth a considerable amount of the wealth is destroyed. The rich get poorer and the poor get poorer.
