"Solid wood" used to mean solid wood as opposed to plywood. Now "solid wood" means plywood as opposed to particle board. I think somebody won a court case or something.

Big Peace : 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell': Tilting at Lavender Windmills

I don't think their behavior would change at all, and probably some of the "tough guys" are gay and will figure that out in ten years. But my point is that a huge majority of the seventeen year old males who enlist in the military find homosexuality off-putting. Look at the responses to this article. The military guys don't seem to like homosexuals very much. How do you make the military attractive to young men who are creeped out by homosexuals, when you allow homosexuals to serve openly? Don't tell me you don't see the difficulty in that. And I didn't say "running around saying etc." to reinforce a "prancing queen" stereotype. I'm just arguing that don't ask don't tell isn't a fifteen year old policy, it's a 235 year old policy, but that before it was officially codified into law it was enforced by social mores instead of the military police.

Big Peace : 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell': Tilting at Lavender Windmills

It would solve both of those problems, but you would still have 18-22 year old soldiers who are mortified about serving with homosexuals. This is the fine line I'm concerned about: you want people with technical skills, AND you want tough guys who can tolerate tough going, and you're offering, what, $20,000 a year to start? You don't want to scare away all of your old-fashioned heterosexual guys, but you could really use the gay guys as well, so you have to have a compromise. What's the best compromise? Don't ask - don't tell became law in 1995 or whenever, but I would argue that it has actually existed since 1775. There were probably hundreds of homosexuals at the Battle of Gettysburg, and the Army didn't fall apart, and why? Because society enforced don't ask-don't tell. If all the gay guys in the Army of the Potomac ran around saying "I love spoonin' with fellers and I don't care who knows it", there might have been a problem.

Thank you, you are the only person who has answered my question. I'm just asking if homosexuality is so grievously incompatible with military service, that given qualified personnel who are homosexual, it's better to have no personnel at all. You're experience with the Duran Duran Patrol is informative. See, I've never been in the military, so I don't feel that I have the right to say that all of the men and women who have given their lives for America are heroes, except the homosexuals, they're just sick perverts. (I am in favor of DADT by the way).

I'm not defending anybody. I hoped to make a thought provoking point about the challenges the military faces in integrating homosexuals into its ranks (because like it or not, they're here to stay.)

What are some of the less mild ones? And what's bogus and fallacious about it? If you have an aptitude for language, the Army will teach you one of those languages in a year or less. If you have an aptitude for something else they'll train you in that. I'm not crazy about all this gay crap, but what's wrong with a little bit of contemplation of a complex issue?
